Description	:	Raymond Oiler, oldest son of Walter and Sadie Mae Oiler was born near Elston, Iowa, on December 27, 1912, and departed this life February 16, 1978, at home. He was 65 years, 1 month, and 18 days of age. He moved to the Lamoni vicinity at an early age and attended Bloomington grade school. He graduated from Lamoni High School in 1931. Read More	Raymond Oiler, oldest son of Walter and Sadie Mae Oiler was born near Elston, Iowa, on December 27, 1912, and departed this life February 16, 1978, at home. He was 65 years, 1 month, and 18 days of age. He moved to the Lamoni vicinity at an early age and attended Bloomington grade school. He graduated from Lamoni High School in 1931. On November 15, 1939, he was united in marriage to Edna Mac Pierson. To this union a daughter, Linda Rae, and a son, Edward Byron, were born. On February 28, 1977, Ray retired from the U.S. Postal Service after serving 40 years and 10 months both in the office and as a rural carrier on route #I. He belonged to the Rural Carriers Association and served several years as county secretary-treasurer. He has served his community as well. He was a volunteer fireman for 36 years, and 35 years as secretary-treasurer. He served on the park board as secretary-treasurer for 18 years. He was an avid sport enthusiast and wanted the young people to have the best facilities possible. He was forced to take a disability retirement because of a rare disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease" this was diagnosed in October of 1975. Preceding him in death were his mother and father. He leaves to mourn his passing his companion, Edna; daughter, Linda Rae and husband, Melvin Hickman; son, Edward Byron and wife, Tammy; four grandchildren, Andrea and Brian Hickman and Erik and Tara Oiler; two brothers, Harold and wife, Paul, and Quentin and wife, Winnie; brother in-law and sister-in-law, Loren and Edith Truman; aunts; nieces; nephews; cousins and other relatives and friends. He loved to raise flowers and his yard and garden were an example of his work from early spring to late fall. He loved his work and the people he served. He had many friends, a good marriage, devoted family, and a successful career. The American Dream. Funeral services, under the direction of the Lamoni Funeral Home, were held Friday, February 17, 1978 at 2 p.m. from the Lamoni RLDS Church.
