Thanks, Nancy (Letcher) Heib. ---------------------------------- Raymond had one sister, Cecile Gay Upham, who married Lloyd Feather Bliss. ------------------------------------ Raymond was born on Dec. 21, 1908 at "Rest Cottage" in Elkhart, Elkhart County Indiana (per legal adoption papers that were handed down through the family, in which his "birth mother" gives up legal custody of him to Clarence and Cleo Upham). The "Social Security Death Index" records, also show this as his date and place of birth. (His death certificate "incorrectly" states that he was born on Dec. 8, 1908 in Michigan). ---------------------------------- Several newspaper articles in the Mishawaka, Indiana and the South Bend, Indiana newspapers, tell of Raymond being left on the doorstep of the home of Clarence and Cleta "Cleo" Upham, at 316 West Seventeenth Street, in Mishawaka, Indiana, when he was a newborn. They called the police, who took him to the "Children's Aid Society and Orphans Home", in Mishawaka, Indiana (also known as the "Childrens Aid Society, of Indiana", located on the corner of Lincoln Way and Logan Street). He was soon-after adopted by Clarence and Cleo Upham when he was 3 and 1/2 or 4 weeks old. One of the articles reads as follows: --------------------------- BABY IS ADOPTED BY HIS DOORSTEP PARENTS. Little baby "Jimmie", whom good fortune left on the doorstep of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Upham's home, at 316 West Seventeenth street, several weeks ago, has been adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Upham and will have a good home and a father and mother's care. The foster parents applied for the return of the child which had been taken from the home on the day it was found on the doorstep, and the matron of the Children's Aid Society to which institution it had been taken, and Chief of Police ["Jimmie"] Jarret agreed that they should have the child. It is a source of great delight to those who have become interested in the baby boy that he has fallen into good hands. The child is an exceptionally pretty one and makes friends with every one who calls to see him. He was christened "Jimmy" in honor of the officer who took charge of him when he was found at the Upham home. ------------------------------------ A receipt for payment to the Children's Aid Society and Orphan's Home, in Mishawaka, Indiana (also handed down through the family), reads as follows: ---- Children's Aid Society & Orphan's Home. Jan. 19, 1909. Received of Mr. Upham for board for Raymond, $1.75. [Signed] Sadie Williams, Asst. Supt. ---------------------------------- The legal adoption papers show that he was then legally adopted by Clarence and Cleo Upham. Note: Raymond's "birth mother" was a young, unwed, 15-year-old girl. (She was later married, and had a family). She is, by chance, buried not far from Raymond, in this Oak Ridge Cemetery. ---------------------------------- Raymond and his family then moved to Buchanan, Michigan in 1911 (when Raymond was about 2 or 3 years old), per his father's obituary, and lived on a 29 acre farm, next door to the Oak Ridge Cemetery (on the West side, near the maintenance building). -------------------------------- Raymond graduated from the Buchanan High School in Buchanan, MI in 1927. (One family member states that Raymond suffered from epilepsy, of which they saw him have a seizure at school). -------------------------------- Raymond was never married and had no children. -------------------------------- After Cleta "Cleo" Upham died, Raymond and his father moved "in town", and lived at 406 West Fourth Street, in Buchanan, MI. -------------------------------- The 1958 Buchanan City Directory lists Raymond Upham, living at 406 W. Fourth St., in Buchanan, Michigan, and working at the Mission Hills Memorial Gardens cemetery. --------------------------------- In the obituary for his sister Cecile (Upham) Bliss, in July of 1975, it states that Raymond was living in LaPorte, Indiana. --------------------------------- After his father Clarence Upham passed away, Raymond moved to LaPorte, LaPorte County Indiana, and was working for "Scott Foresman and Co." (a textbook publisher). ----------------------------------- Raymond died from a cancerous brain tumor, at the age of 69. He died in the Fountainview Terrace Nursing Home in LaPorte, LaPorte Co. Indiana (per his death certificate). At the time of his death, he was living at 1221 and 1/2 St. Road, # 2. The Haverstock Funeral Home Inc. at 602 Maple St., LaPorte, Indiana handled the final arrangements. ----------------------------------- Raymond is buried next to his sister Cecile, and behind his parents, in Section D, Lot 211.
