Ray was born February 27, 1925 at Indianola, Nebraska, the sixth of eleven children of Leo J. Luther and Anna M. (Lennemann) Luther Colgan. Ray received his primary school in Indianola, Nebraska through the 8th grade and then attended high school in Curtis, Nebraska, graduating from the Nebraska School of Agriculture with the class of 1942. Read More	Raymond Walter "Ray" Luther, died Thursday, October 24, 2013, at Phelps Memorial Health Center, Holdrege, Nebraska. Ray was born February 27, 1925 at Indianola, Nebraska, the sixth of eleven children of Leo J. Luther and Anna M. (Lennemann) Luther Colgan. Ray received his primary school in Indianola, Nebraska through the 8th grade and then attended high school in Curtis, Nebraska, graduating from the Nebraska School of Agriculture with the class of 1942. Ray then pursued higher education at McCook College, McCook, Nebraska and the University of Nebraska. Lincoln, Nebraska. On August 4, 1944, he was inducted into the Army Air Force, serving his country as a pilot during World War II in the Pacific Theater until his honorable discharge on April 8, 1946. He was decorated with the World War II Victory Ribbon, Air Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal and the China Liberation Medal. On February 7, 1948 he was united in marriage to Betty Jean "B.J." Carlson at Holdrege, Nebraska and to this union seven children were born: Teresa, Mary, Linda, Karen, Dana, Tom and Connie. At a young age, Ray followed in the footsteps of his father, learning the trade of meat packing. He was employed with his father, Leo at the Luther Locker and Packing Company, Holdrege, Nebraska. In 1949, Ray took over the family business as owner/operator until 1978 when he sold the business. He was then employed in advertising sales until his retirement. Ray was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church, Holdrege, Nebraska was a 50 year member of the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66, Holdrege, Nebraska and also served as Past Commander and was active with United Commercial Travelers for several years, as a 50 year member. Ray's hobbies through the years were golfing and playing cards, but most importantly he loved attending his grandchildren's activities. Besides his parents, Ray was preceded in death by: daughter, Mary Kathryn born at rest; brothers: Bud, Donald and Charles Luther; sisters: Evelyn Ferree and her husband, Jay, Mary Luther at the age of two and Dorothy Luther at the age of one and Wilma Hoppe and her husband, Ed and brothers-in-law: Larry Cummings and Bill Needham. Ray leaves to mourn his passing; wife of 65 years, Betty Jean "B.J." Luther of Holdrege, Nebraska; daughters: Teresa Luther and her husband, Art Langvardt of Doniphan, Nebraska, Linda Imel and her husband, Kyle, Karen Benjamin and her husband, Steve, Dana Kness and her husband, Steve all of Holdrege, Nebraska, Connie Florell and her husband, Randy of Colorado Springs, Colorado; son, Tom Luther of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandchildren: Stephanie Noble and her husband, Dan, Matt Benjamin and his wife, Mandy, Cody Benjamin, Kelly Carden and her husband, Tim, Kelsie O'Brien and her husband, Aaron, Kim Hemmer and her husband, Jake, Kristen Schwarz and her husband, Chris, Jarad Kness and his wife, Courtney, Jessica Feilmeier and her husband, Ben, and Jordan Florell; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Luther and his wife, Jennifer; sisters: Virginia Needham and Jean Cummings; sisters-in-law: Elaine Luther and Kathryn Luther and a host of family and friends. A Memorial Mass for Raymond W. Luther will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the All Saints Catholic Church, Holdrege, Nebraska with Father Thomas Lux officiating. Military Honors will be provided following the Mass at the church by the Offutt U.S. Air Force Base Military Honor Guard. A private family inurnment was in Prairie Home Cemetery, Holdrege, Nebraska.
