Description	:	Raymond W. Birst, 92, of Bismarck, passed away on Sept. 19, 2016 in a Bismarck Care Center. Ray was born and raised in Turtle Lake, ND on April 28, 1924 to Samuel and Rosina (Schuler) Sigmund. He was educated there and in Wall, SD. In 1940 he left ND and moved to Chicago, IL to work for the Perma Paint Mfg Company until entering the US Navy in 1942. He was discharged in 1945 as a Gunners Mate second class. Ray served in the South Pacific and in the Alaska area during WWII and was... Read More	Raymond W. Birst, 92, of Bismarck, passed away on Sept. 19, 2016 in a Bismarck Care Center. Ray was born and raised in Turtle Lake, ND on April 28, 1924 to Samuel and Rosina (Schuler) Sigmund. He was educated there and in Wall, SD. In 1940 he left ND and moved to Chicago, IL to work for the Perma Paint Mfg Company until entering the US Navy in 1942. He was discharged in 1945 as a Gunners Mate second class. Ray served in the South Pacific and in the Alaska area during WWII and was also involved in several major battles and received the Presidential Citation award along with several battle stars. After his discharge he returned to North Dakota and went to work for various jobs until 1955 when he went to work for the Amoco Oil Co for 30 years and retiring in April 1985. Ray was a life member of American Legion, VFW, DAV, Amvets, Eagles Elks and Elks National Foundation and Moose Club. He is survived by four daughters, Linda (Merle) Greer, of Youngsville, NC, Judy (Tim) Jose, of Rockvale, CO, Jackie Wolfe, of Santa Rosa, CA, Deb (Art) Fode, of Bismarck, three sons, Richard Birst, of Belvidere, IL, Jeff Birst, of Taylor, MI, and Jeff Lawler, of Bismarck, six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wives Delores andMary Jo, his parents, one brother, Ruben (Lois) Birst, two step brothers, six step sisters. Bismarck Funeral Home
