The first and middle name spellings and sequence vary with sources, and due to a mis-interpretation of the inscription spelling that was used in a Batavia cemetery transcription project there was unfortunate additional confusion added to the mix.
To wit:
> The actual inscription reads: Rezin H. Riggs.
> The first name was inadvertently read as "Bezin" instead of "Rezin" in a previous Batavia Cemetery transcription project. The first letter would be extremely easy to misidentify due to weathering and the angle of sunlight, but when inspected and photographed on July 27, 2014 it was clear that the spelling was engraved as "Rezin", followed by a middle initial "H".
> Evidently a 1850 U.S. Census for Ohio listed the name as "Hammond Riggs", aged 44.
> Some Ancestry family trees have listed the full name as "Hammond Reason Riggs", reversing the first and middle name order, at a minimum, in addition to the phonetic interpretation of "Reason" instead of "Rezin".
> Iowa did not mandate birth and death records until mid-1880, so there is NO death record available for inspection to use as a vital record check.
> Although it is likely that the death took place in Iowa, it isn't certain exactly in which county he died - either Jefferson county or neighboring Wapello county would be good educated guesses.
> No full Fairfield area newspaper obituary has been found to provide family information/clarification.
Update: a new search of Fairfield area newspapers on microfilm at the Fairfield Public Library on November 16, 2014 found this, the only death related item:

Am revising this memorial to be entered as "Rezin H. Riggs" per the inscription, but am adding in the rather clunky "Hammond Reason" for the nickname since alternative spellings and name order is not possible with FindAGrave memorials at this time. It isn't a perfect solution, obviously, but a compromise.
While it is true that searching for "Hammond Riggs" won't reveal this memorial directly, family researchers should be advised to search the surname "Riggs" and use DOB/DOD years to provide fuller search results (a good practice to follow anyway). This memorial is made using the headstone inscription information. A listing of "Riggs" surnames in Batavia Cemetery does reveal this memorial, with the nickname "Hammond Reason".
Anyone who has an entry for "Hammond Reason Riggs" on their Ancestry family tree are welcome to put in a web-link to this memorial, and put in the alternate name(s) in descriptions.

Sir Thomas Davis < Captain James Davis born between 1575 and 1580 in England married Rachell Keyes circa 1607/8 in England. It is assumed they married either before James first sailed to America or on one of his many trips back to England around this time. Captain James Davis died circa 1633/34 in Henrico, Henrico County, Virginia, at approximately age 53-58. He was an early settler of the Colonies and well known by Captain John Smith. According to John Bennett Boddie (a genealogical historian) "his [Capt. Captain James Davis Bio He was an "Ancient Planter" as he was one of the original settlers of Jamestown. When he was 27 years old and set sail on 1st June 1607 from Plymouth, England to Virginia. Captain James Davis has been mentioned as Gentleman, Captain, Captain of Fort Sagadahoc, Maine, Colony Governor; original settler of Jamestown, Virginia, and "Ancient Planter." It appears that he spent a considerable amount of time sailing back and forth between England and Virginia, and Boddie notes he "was among the company of men assembled by Sir John Popham, 1607, to settle the region of Virginia which later was designated New England." In 1607 he helped establish the first English colony in New England (Sagadahoc, Maine). Unfortunately the colonists there had a very hard time of it and most returned home to England by 1610. At that point, James sailed on to Jamestown in Oct. of 1609 aboard the ship Virginia where he became one its earliest settlers, one of the "ancient planters." Captain James Davis died on 16 February 1622/23 in James City, Henrico, Nansemond County, Virginia; death noted by Hotten: "James Davis, dead at his plantation over the water from James City, February 16, 1623." Whether he was killed by the Indians or not is not shown.
