She was the daughter of Robert and Rebecca Nichols, being the youngest in the family of eight children, consisting of five sons and three daughters. She was the daughter of Robert and Rebecca Nichols, being the youngest in the family of eight children, consisting of five sons and three daughters. The parents with their children, emigrated to the Territory of Iowa in the early spring of 1842 and settled on a farm one-half mile west of Cairo, in Louisa county. Two years later her parents purchased a farm at Oakland Bluffs where they resided until their death, the father in 1868 and the mother in 1879. After the death of her parents, Miss Nichols remained on the home place until 1889, when she and her brother, John, removed to Morning Sun, where he died in 1893. From this time until she passed away on February 6, 1908, she had in home as a companion her niece, Miss Margaret Sloan, whose care and devotion has been that of a daughter, unwearied and unceasing. Of her immediate family, only one remains, a brother, Robert A., who lives six miles west of Wapello, near the old home. Many other relatives and friends sincerely mourn the death of Aunt Jannie, who was a universal favorite and whose Christian life and example was an inspiration to all who knew her. Miss Nichols united with Oakland Presbyterian church on the 6th day of June 1857, and in 1889 transferred her membership to Morning Sun Presbyterian church and was ever a most consistent and devoted Christian.
