Description	:	Rebecca M. Brown was the oldest daughter of William Harrison Brown, Sr. and Julia Stout Brown. On June 24, 1850, Becky married John E. Elledge of Wilkes County. They were the parents of 10 children. Becky and John's life together was not without hardship, especially during the war years of 1861-1865. Three of Becky's brothers joined the Confederate army--two of whom did not survive the war. Her father Wm H. Brown was the oldest daughter of William Harrison Brown, Sr. and Julia Stout Brown. On June 24, 1850, Becky married John E. Elledge of Wilkes County. They were the parents of 10 children. Becky and John's life together was not without hardship, especially during the war years of 1861-1865. Three of Becky's brothers joined the Confederate army--two of whom did not survive the war. Her father Wm H. Brown, 70, a defender of the Union-- was arrested, tortured, and died from the stress of trying to hide his youngest son from the Confederate Home Guard. Becky's husband and brother-in-law were Union sympathizers and chose to "hide out" the war years somewhere north of Wilkes County. In 1872, Becky's 45 year-old husband John E. Elledge died, leaving her a widow with 9 children left at home. The final years of her life were spent living at Hays with her son George W. Elledge and family. Mrs. Rebecca M. Elledge of Hays Postoffice: Mrs. John Elledge, aged, 88 years, died Tuesday at her home near Mountain View after having suffered from influenza last fall. She is survived by several children--Mrs. L. M. Jennings of this town, Mrs. G. V. Brown of North Wilkesboro R.F.D. No. 1, Mrs. J. A. Elledge and Messrs. Joseph P., D. S. and G. W. Elledge, who live near Mountain View, and W. B. Elledge, who lives near Ronda. Mrs. Elledge died the day of the 88th anniversary of her birth. She is survived by one brother, Mr. George Brown, a prominent and wealthy citizen of Statesville and once clerk of the federal court there from whom Mrs. Elledge received a present of a $50 check only last Christmas.
