Rebecca Marie Campbell was the daughter of Franklin Charles and Olava M (Clara) Madland Campbell. She was raised near Gilman and attended Gilman schools. She graduated from Gilman High School in 1929. She was married to Carl Gilbert Peterson on March 20, 1931. To this union five children were born; Robert, Edgar, Roger, Carol and Marilyn They farmed around the Gilman area for years until they retired and moved to Gilman in 1983. They wintered in Carlsbad, California for many years, where she enjoyed walking along the beach and going to swap meets and shopping. Among Marie's many interests were her huge flower and vegetable gardens, canning and preserving foods, sewing clothes, quilt making, and embroidery work. Even after moving to town she maintained a garden until she was in her 90's and no longer able to maintain it. One of her great loves was reading. She was a wonderful cook and hosted many family gatherings. She was a member of the Gilman Community Church Guild and was active in several clubs when they farmed. She enjoyed basketball and never missed one of her children's games. In later years, she enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball games on TV.
