Mrs. Rebecca Mendel. Mrs. Mendel came to Iowa from Washington, Pa., in October, 1851, and settled with her husband and family near Martinsburg in Keokuk county. Mrs. Mendel was a widow for a number of years and for twenty-one years, she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. William C. Malone [sic], who resides on Summit street. The funeral was conducted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Malone [sic] Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock by the Rev. Thos. E. Sherman, pastor of the West End Presbyterian church and the remains were interred in the Shaul cemetery. Mrs. Mendel was born August 19, 1813, making her nearly 91 years of age. She was the mother of seven children, three of whom are still living. One daughter, Mrs. Maggie Thompson, lives in Kansas City, Mo., one son, Mr. Henry Mendel, who lives at Wallback, Nebraska, and Mrs. W.C. Malone [sic], of Ottumwa. Mrs. Mendel died of blood poison and was a great sufferer for several days before death relieved her. Contributed.
