Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Reg was born Jan. 26, 1913, to Frank and Antonie (Menhart) Baloun, rural Highmore. His parents were Bohemian immigrants who homesteaded in northern Hyde County, where Reg spent his childhood and received his education. On Oct. 21, 1935, he married Elsie Martz at Gettysburg, S.D. and they began their life together on a farm north of Highmore. In 1944 they purchased a farm south of Seneca where they raised their seven children. In 1982 they semi-retired and moved to their new home near Seneca. After 66 years of marriage, Elsie died Dec. 7, 2001. Reg continued to live on the farm until failing health caused him to enter Beverly Healthcare in Redfield on Jan. 31, 2004. Reg was an avid reader. He was a student of life long learning, especially in the field of medicine and veterinary care. In his younger years, he was a competitive baseball player. Reg enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards. For many years he made yearly fishing trips Canada with his friends from Faulkton. Reg was a very hard worker. He spent countless hours caring for his shelterbelts and acres of evergreen trees. He loved the outdoors and nature. Farming and ranching were his life. Because of his passion for animals, especially horses and cattle, ranching was his true love. In the 1960s, Reg, with the help of family members and neighbors, drove 500 head of yearlings on a 30-mile trail drive to market at Faulkton. Reg enjoyed being with people of all ages, young, and old. He truly valued all the time spent with his family and the many friends and neighbors. He served as a Faulk County Commissioner and Ellisville Township Board Member. He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Darleen (Gordon) Bauhs, Fort Collins, Colo., Eugene (Dianne) Baloun, Seneca, Yvonne (Ken) O'Connor, Prescott, Ariz., Terry (Sheryl) Baloun, Sioux Falls, Gloria (Mario) Hansen, Redfield and Brad (Cam May) Baloun, Sioux Falls; nine grandsons: Corey, Shawn, Dalton, Shad, Brett, Tate, Aron, Adam, and Eric; 13 granddaughters: Darcy, Lisa, Michelle, Suzette, Melannie, Jody, Natalie, Heather, Nichole, Traci, April, Faye, and Renae; 19 great-grandchildren: Cobly, Casee, Jessica, Kia, Taylor, Jarod, Emma, Jake, Cooper, Max, Tanner, Riley, Sawyer, Tegan, Marcus, Maggie, Savannah, Siah, and Grace; two brothers: Ray Baloun and Melvin Baloun, both of Highmore; and sister Irene Weber of Aberdeen; and numerous nieces and nephews. Reg was preceded in death by his wife Elsie; son Daryl; two sisters Rosie Heinzen and Geneva Fieldsend; three brothers: Vern Baloun, Richard Baloun, and an infant brother Leonard Baloun. Pallbearers will be his nine grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be his 13 granddaughters. Published in the Aberdeen News on 1/29/2006.
