Description	:	Reiner was born to Jacob Uilderks and Engel (Wubben) Poppenga. The following is from the Lennox Diamond Jubilee Book. Reiner J. Poppenga was born July 28, 1837 at Rysum, Ostfriesland, Germany. He grew to manhood there and in 1862 was united in marriage to Altje Seebelts. They remained in their native land for six years following their marriage and in 1868 embarked for the United States. Upon their arrival in this country they settled at Ackley, Iowa, and farmed there until 1877 when, in September of that year, they came to Dakota Territory and Middleton Township. Later the family took up their residence on a farm nearby, in Lincoln county, purchasing the tract and there establishing their permanent home. Thirteen children were born to this union, seven of whom died in infancy—three in Germany, two in Iowa, and two here. Mrs. Poppenga passed away in 1906. Mr. Poppenga died May 26, 1923 at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 27 days. In the winter previous to his demise, Mr. Poppenga's health failed steadily, he residing in Lennox with his daughter, Mrs. Simon Symens, and later with a son, Ben J. Poppenga, where he subsequently passed away. Six children survived: Ben, Jacob, George, Reiner, and Sam Poppenga, and Mrs. Simon Symens. Mr. and Mrs. Poppenga were charter members of the Turner county First Presbyterian church. They later became affiliated with the Delaware Reformed church, and following their deaths buried in the church cemetery adjoining.
