Rena was born in Faith on May 14, 1922, to Clyde and Maude (Miller) Evans. She grew up on a prairie farm six miles north and two miles west of Platte. She enjoyed family life on the farm with her parents, four sisters, and three brothers. She graduated from the 8th grade at the local rural school and then went on to graduate from Platte High School in 1940. After attending the National Business Training School in Sioux City, IA, she was then employed by Corps of Engineers in Sioux City and later at Liberal, Kansas. On May 20, 1943, she married her high school sweetheart CPT John L. Johnson in Dodge City, Kansas. After the war ended they moved to Vermillion so that John could complete his college education. They purchased and ran the Johnson Café in Platte from 1953 to 1961. After selling the café, Rena worked as a secretary for the State Highway Department in Platte for 26 years. She was also an active supporter of her husband's National Guard career. She was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Charles Mix Republican Party, American Legion Auxiliary, Platte Women's Club, and the Eastern Star. Rena is survived by her two sons: Jeff C.(Sherrylee) Johnson of Pierre, and Craig D. (Marcia) Johnson of Rapid City; 5 grandchildren: Emily, John, and Joshua Johnson of Rapid City, and Patrick and Preston Johnson of Pierre, along with 1 sister: Cora Hodge of Seattle, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, on September 28, 1993, and 3 sisters: Keva Alexandria, Nita Breen and Helen Brant and 4 brothers: Dudley, Jack, Thomas, and Bryce Evans.
