He attended the rural school near his home and graduated from Deep River High School in 1931. Went to William Penn College for two years and taught in the Correll rural school for four years. He was married to Helen Opal Johnston on December 28, 1933 in Kirksville, Missouri. They were the parents of six children; Beverly Rae, Richard Burdett, Karen Louise, David Cloyd, Stephen Roger and Donald Eugene. Burdett returned to farming where he and Helen raised their family. He was among the first in the area to practice conservation tillage. He was fond of trees and planted and grafted fruit and nut trees. He was an active member of the Iowa Nut Growers Association. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing and trapping. He also enjoyed playing cards, particularly Rook. He enjoyed sports as well, playing baseball and basketball in high school and then centerfield in baseball and softball for the Deep River town team. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Deep River and later the United Church that was formed by the union of the Presbyterian and Methodist congregations.
