Derwood Bost, a lifelong resident of Kannapolis and a distinguished community servant, died peacefully at NorthEast Medical Center on Sept. 2, 2006. He was 81. Born July 5, 1925, in Kannapolis to Lillie and Everette Bost, Derwood Bost knew Cannon Mills at an early age. After his parents jointly logged more than 83 years of service in Weaving Room No. 1, Derwood Bost himself was employed by Cannon Mills for more than 40 years, the majority of these in management. After graduating from J.W. Cannon High School, Mr. Bost joined the Order and Data Processing Department at Cannon Mills before signing up for military service with U.S. Air Corps and the U.S. Army. He served in the Pacific Theater from 1943 until 1946 and attained the rank of Sergeant Major prior to his discharge at the war's end. After starting out his college studies before his wartime duties at Bowling Green Business University in Bowling Green, Ky., Mr. Bost, upon return to civilian life, entered Catawba College and graduated magna cum laude in 1950 with a major in accounting. Cannon Mills again became Mr. Bost's employer, and he returned to the company to continue his work in their Order and Data Processing Department. Shortly thereafter, in 1953, he joined Cannon's management team as the assistant controller in the Auditing Department, and in 1955 he successfully completed the Certified Public Accountant Exam. Derwood Bost continued to serve Cannon Mills for the next 17 years, until 1980, in the subsequent positions of assistant vice President and director of audit and taxes. In 1980, he was promoted to Cannon's executive team as the company's vice president and director of finance. Mr. Bost continued his employment with Cannon Mills until his retirement in 1987. At that time, he established an independent CPA practice that continued until 1994. A lifelong advocate and promoter of his community, Mr. Bost served as a board member for Kannapolis City Schools from 1963 until 1974 and chairman of the board from 1974-1978. He was a Kannapolis City Councilman for 13 years (1984-1997). At the same time, Mr. Bost remained committed to serving his church, both as the North Carolina Lutheran Men State Loan and Gift Fund Treasurer from 1950-70, and as Sunday school teacher at Organ (Zion) Lutheran Church in Salisbury for 48 consecutive years. From 1971-90, he served as the Kannapolis Volunteer Fireman's Retirement and Relief Fund Treasurer. In 1996, the City of Kannapolis honored him as its Community Volunteer of the Year. A member of the Kannapolis Rotary Club for more than 30 years, he served on their board of directors and in the capacities of president, vice president and treasurer. In 1997-98 and in 2003-04, this local chapter recognized him as their Distinguished Rotarian of the Year. Mr. Bost continued his service to the community as a member of the Board of Directors at NorthEast Medical Center for 16 years (1994-2003) - the last nine in the capacity of board chairman. In 2002, he received the Trustee of the Year Award from the North Carolina Hospital Association for his outstanding service and dedication to healthcare in the state. His years of service and leadership at the hospital encompassed a period of record growth, technology additions and physical expansions. During his tenure, NorthEast Medical Center was recognized as one of the fastest growing hospitals in the country by "Modern Healthcare Magazine," and its medical staff grew from 125 physicians to more than 300. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Gail Lumsden Bost, and their two children: Philip E. Bost and Deborah Gayle Bost. Three grandchildren, who shared in his later years and now mourn his passing, include Byron Anthony Bost, Caleb James Harding and Jeremy Philip Bost. The four sisters surviving Mr. Bost are Hazel Carlton, Louise Settlemyer, Catherine Barrier and Linda Nabors. The funeral will be Monday, Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. at Organ Lutheran Church in Salisbury with the Rev. Terrance Long, Dr. John E. Pless and the Rev. Robert Yount officiating. Burial will follow at the Organ Lutheran Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis. At other times, the family will be gathered at the family home. Memorials may be sent to the Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital at NorthEast Medical Center, 920 Church St. N., Concord, NC 28025 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Boy Scout Camp Road, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
