Reuben was born on Easter Sunday, April 16, 1922 to Reinhold and Christine Gutsche. Read More	Reuben Gutsche died at the age of 93 on Sunday, May 31, 2015. He was a resident of Parkwood Estates in Fort Collins, Colorado at the time his death. Reuben was born on Easter Sunday, April 16, 1922 to Reinhold and Christine Gutsche. He was born on the family farm, located 12 miles north of present day Hazen, North Dakota and 7 miles northwest of what was Krem. Reuben was the only son. He had three older sisters, Olga, Josie, Rhea and younger sister, Lenora. Reuben was baptized and was confirmed at Saint Peters church north of Hazen. Reuben attended the rural school near his home and completed the 8th grade. Reuben married Laura Unterseher on April 18, 1943 in Hazen, they celebrated 72 years together. They raised three sons, Dwight, David and Craig. Reuben was a lifelong resident of Hazen. His many occupations included Farmers Union Service Station Manager in both Hazen and for a short time in Stanton, a coal miner at the Trux Trar mine north of Hazen as a heavy equipment operator. He also worked on the Garrison Dam as an equipment operator. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), working at the “PEACE GARDEN” near the Canadian border and later in the “BLACK HILLS” at Custer State Park. What Reuben liked most was working as a farmer, which is what he is remembered most as. Reuben and Laura bought the family farm from his parents in 1949, moved onto the farm in April of 1950. On the farm they raised various grains, purebred Angus beef cattle, pigs and chickens. In 1957 they sold the Angus beef cattle and entered the dairy business. Reuben even continued work one a neighbor’s farm after he retired and moved to a house in Hazen. Reuben was instrumental in establishing the Rural Fire Brigade north of Hazen as well as the Hazen Horseshoe club. He was involved in the Hazen Senior Center, enjoyed playing card games and watching the Minnesota Twins, and Colorado Rockies play baseball. He was a member of English Lutheran Church in Hazen for most of his life, serving frequently as a deacon and on the church board. He and Laura joined Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church when they moved to Fort Collins in 2014. Reuben is survived by his wife Laura, his son Dwight and daughter-in-law Brenda Gutsche, sister-in-law Marvelou Perry and husband Abe Lopez, Pam Heier and Cheryl Johnson, four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters and brothers in-laws, Olga & Herbert Suess, Josie & Eldor Rasch, Rhea & Ervin Benz, Lenora Mabry and his sons David (1947-2013) and Craig (1955-1980). Reuben requested that his body be donated to science. A memorial service will be held at the English Lutheran Church in Hazen, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2015.
