Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM CDT, Thursday, May 21, 2015 at English Lutheran Church, with Pastor Mary Lou Aune officiating. Burial will follow at the Hazen City Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion, Clark-Grosz Post #189. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 20 from 6:00 to 8:00pm CDT at Barbot Funeral Home, Hazen. Reuben was born December 4, 1924, to Emanuel and Emilia (Richter) Mittelsteadt. He grew up in the Krem and Hazen area, and attended Elm Grove rural school until 8th grade. When he wasn’t helping his Dad on the family farm, Reuben worked for other farmers and ranchers in the area until he gained land of his own. Working with teams of horses as well as early farm tractors and machinery, Reuben spent most of his youth learning how to be a conscientious farmer. At 20, Reuben joined the Army and fought in WWII in the South Pacific from June 28, 1944 to May 15, 1946. On November 14, 1950, he married Frieda Becker at English Lutheran Church in Hazen. Together they farmed and ranched eight miles north east of Hazen for more than 50 years. Reuben was a dedicated steward of the land, using “organic” farming methods before the movement became popular. He was honored for his land conservation practices in 1972 when we was awarded the Mercer County Soil Conservation Farmer of the Year. Although Reuben never had the opportunity to attend high school, he went to Veteran-sponsored agricultural classes in Stanton, ND under the GI Bill from 1951 – 1953. In 1981 Reuben was elected to the West River Telephone Co. board of directors and served for 18 years. He was also actively involved through the years with the Hazen Wrangler Saddle Club, the American Legion, church council, and the Senior Center to name a few. In 2003 Reuben retired from active farming and moved to Hazen, but he couldn’t stay idle and helped Russell Walter on the farm whenever he would let him. In 2010, progression of his Parkinson’s disease prompted him and Frieda to move to Devils Lake, ND, to be closer to family. He was lovingly taken care of by Eventide/Heartland Care assisted living staff then later long-term care staff. Reuben often said he had no hobbies, yet he was tough to beat at any card game and was fascinating to watch shoot pool, a “southpaw”, with a shaky Parkinson’s handicap. In earlier years, Reuben and Frieda traveled throughout the state for horseshoe tournaments, even taking part in the World Horseshoe tournament when it was held in Minnesota. All who knew him will fondly remember Reuben for his quick wit and mischievous grin. He is survived by one daughter, Pat (Tim) Reiner of Devils Lake, ND; one son, Mike (Michelle) Mittelsteadt of Wauwatosa, WI; five granddaughters, Holly (Mike) Lucht of Maple Valley, WA, Krista (Dan) Wey of Las Vegas, NV, Erin Reiner of Fargo, ND and Katie and Melanie Mittelsteadt of Wauwatosa, WI; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Ken (Sylvia) Mittelsteadt of Mesa, AZ, two sisters, Lorna Gauthier of West Fargo, ND and Violet Oland of Fergus Falls, MN; a brother-in-law, Maynard Working of Hattiesburg, MS and sister-in-laws Eleanor Becker of Beulah, ND and Esther Schalkle of Phoenix, AZ; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Reuben was preceded in death by only 45 days by his wife of 64 years, Frieda and by his brothers, Leo, Ray, and Clarence and sisters, Doris and Karen.
