GEORGE - Mr. Reuben Ray Murdaugh, Sr., 78, of 1436 Highway 15 South in St. George and formerly of Varnville, S.C., died Wednesday morning at his residence after an extended illness. Born April 10, 1926, in Islandton, S.C., he was the son of the late Jesse Murdaugh and Lillie Gibson Murdaugh. He was first married to the late Velma Murdaugh and was presently married to Vera Walters Murdaugh. A Navy Veteran of World War II, Mr. Murdaugh had been self-employed wall paper installer and painter for many years, was a member of the Moose Lodge in Walterboro, S.C., and had previously been the President of the Jenny Hunt Club for over 30 years. He was a member of Varnville First Baptist Church. Surviving besides his wife of the home is one son, Reuben Ray Murdaugh, Jr., and wife Harriett of Hampton; three sisters, Elizabeth Petrea of Springfiel, Ga., Louise Ponds and Ellen Simmons, both of Allendale; one grandson, Reuben Ray Murdaugh, III, and wife Kim of Beaufort; one granddaughter, Karen Sooter and husband Jeremy of Leesville, S.C.; one step-daughter, Linda Caldarelli of St. Matthews, S.C.; four step-grandchildren, Ronnie Griffith of Harleyville, Steven Griffith of Charleston, Dickie Phalen of Reesville and Bryan Phalen of Cumming, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Logan Way, Megan Sooter and Jacob Sooter; one step-great-grandchild, Austin Griffith. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m., in the Varnville First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Tommy Kelly. Burial will follow in the Varnville Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton on Thursday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. and prior to 12 noon on Friday when the casket will be placed in the church.
