Description	:	Civil War Veteran Co H 5th Iowa Infantry Sperry, Reuben. Age 38. Residence Business Corner,Ia Nativity Ohio. Enlisted June 24 1861. Mustered July 17, 1861. Promoted Corporal Nov. 4, 1861. Discharged for disability Sept. 25, 1862, Jacinto, Miss. The fifth Iowa infantry, in 1861, was involved in skirmishes, expeditions, guarding the railroad and trying to keep the peace in the tumultuous environment of Missouri. The fifth participated in the siege of Corinth,MS Apr 29 –May 30. It took part in the Battle of Iuka where it won high honors by holding its ground against four times its numbers, making 3 bayonet charges and driving the enemy back in disorder. Out of 480 engaged, the 5th lost 220 killed and wounded. The unit remained at Jacinto,MS until Oct 1 1862.
