| Description | : | Son of Moses and Lydia Whitney, he was ordained the first minister of Petersham church in Dec., 1738. He was an uncompromising Tory. His congregation could not accept his beliefs and in 1774, he was dismissed from his parish, but refused to accept his dismissal. The town voted to have Peter Gore, who was half Indian, to stand at the meeting house (where church was held) door to prevent Rev. Whitney from entering.
