He was born in Rahway, NJ and at the age of 15 years went to New York to clerk. He then came to Columbia and clerked for several years. While in Columbia, he joined the Presbyterian Church, and soon afterwards decided to study for the ministry. He graduated with the second honors from the South Carolina College, and after pursuing a regular course in the Seminary was ordained a Minister in the Presbyterian Church in 1849. His first work was as a Missionary in Pickens County, and in 1853 was called to the pastorate of the Anderson Presbyterian Church, which he served until 1862, when he became Chaplain of the 17th S.C.V. and went to the front. During his stay here he was for a short time a Professor in the old Anderson Presbyterian Female College. During the war, he was captured and was confined in the Old Capital Prison in Washington, and was not paroled until July, 1865. After the war, he was Pastor of a Church in Alabama for a number of years and for the past several years preached at Coosaw. During the terrible Atlantic Coast storm last August, he lost nearly everything he possessed.
