Monsignor Albert Manternach, 92, Dubuque, formerly of Cascade, died at 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Cascade, with Archbishop the Most Rev. Jerome Hanus as principal celebrant. Concelebrant will be the Most Rev. Daniel Kucera and fellow visiting priest. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cascade, where military rites will be accorded by the Cascade American Legion Post 528. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at the church, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary recited at 6 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Friday at the church. Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, is in charge of arrangements. He was born on Sept. 25, 1918, in Cascade, son of John and Susan (Lahr) Manternach. He received his education in the former St. Mary's School in Cascade, Iowa. He was a veteran, having served in the Army during World War II, from 1941 to 1945. He attended Loras College, Dubuque, and the Theological College (Catholic University in Washington, D.C.). On June 7, 1952, he was ordained at Christ the King Chapel by Bishop Loras Lane. His numerous assignments included; September 1952 to June 1953 he studied at the University of Michigan; he was the Loras librarian from 1953 to 1963; then at Mount St. Bernard Seminary until July 1968; returned to Loras College until August 1970; Sacred Heart Fillmore and faculty of Aquin High School in Cascade until 1972; St. Mary's, Guttenberg, until 1976; St. Joseph's, Dubuque, until July 1981; St. Joseph's, Earlville, until 1984; St. Patrick's, Waukon and West Ridge, until 1986; and Ss. Peter & Paul, Petersburg, until retiring on July 11, 1989. The Rev. Manternach was named monsignor on July 4, 1987. He served as Dean of the Lansing, Dubuque and Dyersville Deaneries. Surviving are a brother, Francis "Skip" Manternach, of Cascade; a sister, Sr. Anna Marie Manternach, OSF, of Dubuque; and a brother-in-law, Sam Kurt, of Cascade. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Peter Manternach and Leo Manternach, and Nicholas Manternach in infancy; seven sisters, Josephine Manternach, in infancy, Sr. Julia Manternach, Clara Wieneke, Theresa Kurt, Irmina "Min" Dolphin, Sally Neyens and Monica Manternach; three sisters-in-law, Betty Manternach, Delores Manternach and Laura Manternach; and five brothers-in-law, Ed Wieneke, Anthony Quint, Ronald Dolphin, Leon Wolfe and George "Whitey" Neyens.
