Description	:	"Rev. A. D. Smith, was b. at Lebanon, NH, Aug. 25, 1813, and died at Canterbury, NH, Feb. 9, 1886. His father, Dr. Alpheus Smith, was a surgeon's mate in the War of 1812, and died after a few month's service, November, 1813. His mother was Mehitable (Foster) Smith; she remarried to Leach, who d. soon after, and she mar. Isaac Wilson, and she d. in Vermont. Dr. Smith was born in R.I., educated at Providence and practiced medicine awhile in that state. At the time of his death the subject of this sketch was two months old. When three or four yrs old, his mother moved to Hartford, VT. At fourteen he was "bound out" until he became of age. He made the most of his winter school privileges. He became a Christian when seventeen years of age, was baptized at Norwich, VT, May 12, 1830, by Rev. H.N. Plumb, and united with the church in Hartford. On Nov. 5, 1834, he preached his first sermon in the dwelling-house of Reuben Paine. He then spent several weeks with Rev. Nathaniel Bowles, traveling and preaching among the churches of the Vermont Yearly Meeting (Freewill Baptist). Here he formed a taste for itinerating, which continued during his life. At the advice of Mr. Bowles, he visited a neighborhood in W. Corinth, VT, where about 25 were converted. During the next few months he travelled in 13 towns in VT as far north at Lyndon. In May 1834, he was licensed at the Strafford Quarterly Meeting (QM). Rev. J. Woodman being chairman of the examining committee. In the spring of 1836, in company with Ezekiel True, he attended Parsonfield Seminary. These two students preached nearly every Sunday from six to ten miles away. After the summer school he went to the town of Stowe, in northern VT, accompanied by Brother True. A revival followed with forty or fifty conversions. He then went to Corinth, much exhausted and afflicted with a severe cold which resulted in typhoid fever. He was ordained at a session of the Corinth Q.M. June 22, 1837, held at that church. In July he became pastor of the Dover church, NH. He was married to Miss Emily B. TRUE, sister of Rev. Ezekiel True. In the autumn while engaged in extra meetings at New Market, he was taken with severe bleeding of the lungs. In the spring he returned to Corinth, VT and the following winter built him a house and remained there several years. He soon recovered so as to preach regular.
