Decker, 56, since May 10, 1939, pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic church, died suddenly at about 8:30 a.m. today in the church rectory. He had been in failing health for some time. Funeral arrangements were pending the arrival in the city of Bishop Rohlman of the Davenport diocese and Monsignor O'Connell of Keokuk, Dean of the district. Father Decker was born in Ft. Madison on Nov. 21, 1887, the son of Herman and Catherine Decker. He attended school here and later studied for the priesthood at the pontifical college, Josephinum seminary, Columbus, Ohio, where he was ordained June 7, 1913 by the Apostolic Delegate. He celebrated his first mass June 15, 1913. His first assignment was as assistant priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ft. Madison, where he came following his ordination. He remained at St. Mary's for two years and then was assigned as pastor of St. Joseph's church, Brown's Station, Clinton county, Iowa. In 1921 he became pastor of St. Mary's church, Keota, Iowa where he remained until he was transferred to St. Patrick's parish in Ottumwa. Father Decker remained at the Ottumwa parish for eight years, during which time he was prominent in civic and religious affairs. On May 10, 1939, he took over the pastorate of St. Joseph's parish here, succeeding the Rev. W. E. Lowlar, who was assigned to be pastor of St. Francis de Sales church in Keokuk, Iowa. Father Decker was the eldest of 11 children, six of whom, 3 brothers and 3 sisters, survive. These include: Sister M. Burnette, of Mapleton, Iowa; Mrs. Louise Hoenig of Ft. Madison; Mrs. Thomas McKittrick, Gladstone, Ill., Henry Decker, West Point, Stephen Decker, Houston, Texas; and Pete Decker, Ft. Madison.
