Description	:	Rev. Charles Elbert Sperry, 80, husband of Frances McDonald Sperry, died January 20, 2011 at the Self Regional Medical Center. He was a son of the late Albert Pinckney & Ollie Mae Whatley Sperry. Rev. Sperry was a graduate of Greenwood High School, attended Lander College, and the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Charles Elbert Sperry, 80, husband of Frances McDonald Sperry, died January 20, 2011 at the Self Regional Medical Center. He was a son of the late Albert Pinckney & Ollie Mae Whatley Sperry. Rev. Sperry was a graduate of Greenwood High School, attended Lander College, and the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He was a retired United Methodist minister having served at Lupo, Sandy Springs, and the Ebenezer United Methodist Churches. In addition to serving as minister of several local churches, Rev. Sperry led many mission trips to third world countries as well as local areas in order to help those in need. He was also co-owner of Sperry Services, Inc. of Greenwood. Rev. Sperry was a former member of the Harris United Methodist Church and a former board member of the Nomads, Habitat for Humanity and had served as Chairman for the United Methodist Volunteer in Missions. He also served as one of the first Department Heads at Piedmont Technical College and Greenwood Vocational School. In addition to his wife, he survived by their son, Keith H. (Cathy) Sperry; two daughters, Pamela (Neal) Jones & Wendy Carwile, all of Greenwood; daughter-in-law, Marlene Sperry, Lancaster; eight grandchildren, Sandy (Travis) Spoone, Greenwood, Neal Sperry (Korie), Lancaster, Charlcie Sperry (Nathan), Greenville, Zachary Sperry, Kerri Jones, Ethan Sperry, Sunni Carwile, & Sam Jones, all of Greenwood; two great-grandchildren, Will Spoone & Kayla Spoone. In addition to his parents, Rev. Sperry was preceded in death by two sons, Charles E. "Sonny" Sperry, Jr. & William Neal "Billy" Sperry. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 23, 2011, at the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood, with Revs. Nicholas Elliott, Taylor Campbell, & George Doningian officiating. Pallbearers were Jimmy Haynie, John Scott, Paul Johnson, Ned Johnson, John Cobb, Hilton Dodgen, Alexander Nelson, & Mark Amick. Honorary escorts were the United Methodist Volunteers in Missions, Men of Lupo United Methodist Church, and Men of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, along with Ed Carson.
