Dan Garland Jr., 68, 268 Bob Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. Rev. Garland was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Dan Garland Sr. and Effie Pearce Garland. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Beulah Garland, and a brother, Haskiel Garland. Rev. Garland was a member of New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church and a former employee of Carter County Memorial Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Starr Whisnant Garland, of the home; four sons, Danny Garland, Rev. Larry Garland, George Garland and Norman Garland, all of Elizabethton; a daughter, Donna Markland, Elizabethton; a sister, Verna White, Elizabethton; six grandchildren, Angela Garland, John Markland, Lisa Adams, Jackie Morgan, Nickie Garland and Amber Dawn Garland, all of Elizabethton; and two great-grandchildren, Christa and Josh Deloach, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews and special friends, Clyde Peters, Willard Huskins and Arthur Colbaugh, also survive. Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. GARLAND -- Funeral services for Rev. Dan Garland Jr., 68, 268 Bob Hollow Road, Elizabethton, who died Thursday, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday at Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, with Rev. Ray Colbaugh and Rev. Jonas Revis officiating. Music will be under the direction of the New Liberty Quartet. Graveside services and interment will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Forbes Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be C.W. Rambo, Kenneth Carver, Ralph Lowe, Sonny Fletcher, Kenneth Colbaugh, Gale Colbaugh and Howard Grindstaff. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church, Dr. David Fenner, Bill Whisnant Sr., Clifford Peters, Jerry Paul Lyons, Bill Finney, Darrell Walsh and Rube Taylor. Everyone will meet at Forbes Cemetery at 1:55 p.m. Sunday for the graveside service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Friends may also call at the residence, 268 Bob Hollow Road, Elizabethton, or at the residence of a son, Rev. Larry Garland, 635 Hwy. 91, Elizabethton, any time.
