He was born July 25, 1917, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Maurice and Geneva Soltweedle O'Connell, who preceded him in death. On June 4, 1944, he married Mildred Britsch, who survives. He was born July 25, 1917, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Maurice and Geneva Soltweedle O'Connell, who preceded him in death. On June 4, 1944, he married Mildred Britsch, who survives. He was a director of education at Lima State Hospital, where he retired on Oct. 31, 1983. He graduated from Lima Central High School in 1935. He received his bachelor's degree in education and theology from Goshen College, Goshen, Ind., in 1944 and 1945. He received his master's degree in 1968 from Arizona State University, Tempe, Ariz., in adult education. He was ordained into the ministry in the Mennonite Church in 1942 and served as assistant pastor of the Jefferson Street Mennonite Church for 10 years. In 1952, he was appointed by the Mennonite Board of Missions, together with his wife, Mildred, to serve in the capacity of Pastor-Superintendent and Matron, respectively, of the Lima Mennonite Gospel Mission known as the Jefferson Street Mennonite Church, one of the forerunner congregations of the present merged church known as the Lima Mennonite Church. In 1960, he joined the staff at Lima State Hospital, where he was director of education from 1965 until his retirement. He is survived by a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one brother, Darrell O'Connell. Services will begin at 2 p.m. July 15 at Lima Mennonite Church. Pastor Terry L. Ayers and Pastor David Elkins will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to Lima Mennonite Church, 1318 N. Main St., Lima, Ohio 45801.
