Read More	Aged 48y 9m 18d From the December 1994 "Flame" Some of you know that a Methodist Church existed in Pella from 1855 to 1925. The earliest pastor was the Rev. David Sweem, who preached in Pella and six other places as well between 1853 and 1855. Pastor Sweem was born in Ohio in 1819 and came to Iowa in the fall of 1844. He first became an exhorter and then an itinerant preacher in the M.E. Church. He was married, and his wife Eliza and their 10 children lived near Attica. With so many preaching points to reach, Pastor Sweem spent much time on horseback. Dorthoy Sweem Porter tells me that when her great grandfather Sweem could not find a place to sleep, during his travels, he hunted out a hollow log that had often sheltered him in the past. Times were very hard, and pastors often received little or no pay. One time the Sweem cow, which provided half the family income, died, and the family was in dire straits. Pastor Sweem went to Keosauqua to look for work so he could buy food for his family. However in Keosauqua the only work he could find was cleaning out a well, so he took the money he received for the job and 50 cents he already had and purchased two bushels of meal to take home. Pastor Sweem must have been a diligent and effective pastor because in the two years he preached in Pella, the congregation grew, and the church awas able to incorporate on May 21, 1855, a few months before Pastor Sweem moved on to a new charge. I don't know how many members there were at that time, but a year later the church had 150 members and 24 probationers. We can be thankful that Pastor Sweem laid such a solid spiritual foundation for the parish in Pella. David Sweem is buried in a family cemetery in a field near Attica, and it is my hope that someday our church will place a small brass "United Methodist Clery" marker on his grave, in appreciation of his work and influenece in Pella so many years ago.
