Description	:	James J. Fitzpatrick was born on March 12, 1865, in Colesburg, Iowa, the son of James and Mary Hulda Foley Fitzpatrick. He was the second oldest of 12 children in the family and grew up on the family farm. Fitzpatrick was born on March 12, 1865, in Colesburg, Iowa, the son of James and Mary Hulda Foley Fitzpatrick. He was the second oldest of 12 children in the family and grew up on the family farm. He graduated from Greeley High School, Class of 1880; St. Joseph's College (now Loras College, Dubuque), with honors, in 1888; and from the Grand Seminary at Montreal, Canada, with a Bachelor of Divinity, in 1891. He was ordained at St. Raphael Cathedral in Dubuque, Iowa, on July 12, 1891. Father was a Professor of Latin and English, plus the business manager and treasurer at St. Joseph's College, Dubuque, from 1893 to 1901. He worked on his Doctorate degree at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., then in Rome. He received his Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) from the Roman Seminary in July 1903. Fr. Fitzpatrick was appointed the seventh pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church, Marshalltown, on October 26, 1904. He was also named Dean of an area which included Hardin, Marshall, Story, and Tama counties. Within a month of his appointment, he organized a parish census. Marshalltown had 852 Catholics. He worked at erasing the mortgage on the school, which was debt-free by 1907. In 1906, the Knights of Columbus Marshall Council was formed. "Doctor Fitzpatrick" (as he was called) was on the boards of Columbia College (formerly St. Joseph's, Dubuque, now Loras College) and the Marshalltown Library. He helped organize the Marshalltown Savings and Loan Association in 1908. He installed a 986-pipe organ, which debuted on Easter Sunday, April 15, 1911. The Marshalltown Times-Republican termed it "one of the truly great instruments in Central Iowa..." A new brick rectory, with electricity, came in 1912. He replaced the gas lighting in the school and church with incandescent (electrical) lighting. There was no parish debt during this period. Father reorganized the high school classes into a four-year program, added commercial courses, enlarged the music program, and upgraded the school in general. For more than a year before his death, Father Fitzpatrick had not been feeling well. He was irritable, forgetful, and suffered from severe hallucinations of persecution. He was placed in a sanitarium, but, after only a few weeks of treatment, was released. Father died in the rectory on February 16, 1923, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
