Description	:	Elmer E. Greene (1909 - 1990) The Rev. Elmer E. Greene was born February 25, 1909, at Marble Rock, Iowa, the son of Frank and Lena, nee Nieman, Greene. He was baptized and confirmed while the family lived In Canada. He attended grade school in Canada and was graduated from the Nashua, Iowa, High School, and from Concordia Seminary, Springfield, Illinois in 1936, after he vicared at Spring Fountain, Iowa, from 1934-35. Greene (1909 - 1990) The Rev. Elmer E. Greene was born February 25, 1909, at Marble Rock, Iowa, the son of Frank and Lena, nee Nieman, Greene. He was baptized and confirmed while the family lived In Canada. He attended grade school in Canada and was graduated from the Nashua, Iowa, High School, and from Concordia Seminary, Springfield, Illinois in 1936, after he vicared at Spring Fountain, Iowa, from 1934-35. Rev. Greene worked under Synod's Candidate Fund from 1936-37 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sioux City, Iowa. He was ordained in May of 1937 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove, Iowa. On June 29, 1937, Rev. Greene was united in marriage with Mabel, nee Scheel, of Sioux City, Iowa, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sioux City. They were blessed with four children, Robert, Ruth, Marlene and Sheryl. Rev. Greene organized Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Dow City, Iowa, and served the Buck Grove and Dow City parishes from 1937-1941. He then served at Trinity Lutheran, Jefferson, Iowa, 1941-1943; Bethlehem Lutheran, Sutherland, Iowa, 1943-1951; Peace Lutheran, West Bend, Iowa, 1951-1957; St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Mapleton, Iowa, 1957-1974. He retired in 1974 and continued serving Immanuel Lutheran, rural Charter Oak, Iowa, which he had served as a vacancy while living in Mapleton and retired from there in September of 1989. In June of 1987 Rev. Greene and Mabel celebrated his 50th Anniversary In the ministry and their Golden Wedding Anniversary. The Greene's had resided in Denison since 1974, and it was there at his home that Rev. Greene died Thursday morning, July 26, 1990. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 81 years, 5 months, and one day. During his ministry of 52 years, Rev. Greene has served in various Iowa District West offices including; Circuit Counselor, District Youth Board and Social Services, District Walther League President from 1946-1948, and District LWML Counselor for eight years. Locally he was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Lutheran Laymens League, member and past president of the Denison Golden "K" Kiwanis Club and Lt. Governor of Division 12 of Kiwanis; past president of AARP, Pastoral Advisor of Eventide Auxiliary; and Volunteer Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary. Rev. Greene was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Mable Greene of Denison, Iowa, one son Rev. Robert Greene and wife Jean of Round Rock, Texas, three daughters and their husbands, Ruth and Rev. William Couch of Knoxville, Tennessee, Marlene and Rev. Marvin Otto of North Little Rock, Arkansas, and Sheryl and Rev. Walter Anderson of Beaverton, Oregon, 14 grandchildren, one brother, Harry Greene of Nashua, Iowa, and two sisters, Mrs. Grace Bean of Nashua, Iowa, and Mrs. Myrtle Isley of Seattle, Washington. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 30, 1990, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Those conducting the services included the Rev. Dr. Richard G. Kapfer, Proclaiming Minister, the Rev. Kurt R Kaiser, Liturgist, the Rev. Philip E. Block, Lector, and Crucifer, Matthew Gosch. Martha Block served as Trumpeter and Karen Kahl as organist. The vocal selection for the clergy and congregation was "For All The Saints Who From Their Labors Rest". Congregational hymns were "Jerusalem Thou City Fair and High" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Honorary Escorts were attending Clergy and wives and the Denison Golden "K" Club and wives. Casket bearers included Mark Couch, David Greene, Steven Greene, Lawrence Greene, Linn Culley, and Wayne Young. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison.
