Description	:	Enoch Hayes Place, was son of James and Abigail (Hayes) PLACE, and grandson of John and Lucy (Jenness) PLACE. He mar. Sarah Demeritt, 29 Sept 1808, and raised nine children, of which son Demeritt, David Marks, Sarah E., and Mary E., are bur. here. Elder Place was a very active and respected minister in the northeastern Free Will Baptist movement, and rode horseback, or in a carriage, to attend far away meetings, where he was in demand as a speaker, held revivals and organized churches. He kept detailed records in journals which were transcribed by William E. Wentworth, entitled "Journals of Enoch Hayes Place, 1810-1865." These volumes were published by New Hampshire Society of Genealogists, in Concord, NH in 1998. He was ordained a Freewill Baptist minister, Jan. 23, 1813, and was associated with church fathers, John Buzzell, Jonathan Woodworth, J. J. Wentworth, and many others. He was town clerk for some time. One who knew him wrote, "He had a splendid physique--tall, straight, full-chested, with voice like a lion." He was a firm friend of education, missions, and Sunday-schools. He was one of the founders of the Strafford Academy. He was the efficient moderator of the first General Conference at Turnbridge, VT in October 1827, and a member of the four following. He was Ass't moderator of the third, at which he preached from Jer. 12:5. Indeed, he and was a power in the pulpit, and was known for his powerful prayers. He was a trustee of the Printing Establishment, for a long time clerk of his Quarterly Meeting, a secretary of the New Hampshire Charitable Society from its commencement. He married over 500 couples, and attended between twelve and thirteen hundred funerals. Church records and books note that he always had sound words and wise counsel. His work as a pastor/preacher was of inestimable value to his church. He died from heart disease in his 79th year.
