Ephraim Bowles (February 09, 1829 ~ December 18, 1914) 9 February 1829 - 18 December 1914 * EPHRAIM BOWLES, AGED FRIEND, DEAD AT 86 Quaker Valley Resident Victim of Pneumonia— Burial Wednesday Morning at 11 a.m. Ephraim Bowles, aged 86 years and father of Levi Bowles, at Quaker Valley, died early Monday morning about 2 o'clock, from the effects of a severe cold, contracted about a week ago, which brought on pneumonia. Funeral services will be held from the Stone Meeting House, Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock. Burial will be made in Friend's cemetery, one half miles south of Inavale store. Ephraim Bowles is survived by four sons: Levi, at whose home he was living, L. H. Bowles, of Friendswood, Texas, E. Bowles of Prosser, Washington, and Gilbert of Tokyo, Japan. Three daughters also survive: Mrs. Ellen Newlin, of Earlham, Iowa, Mrs. Joanna Mott, of Earlham, Iowa, and Mrs. Edith Worth, of Friendswood, Texas. The two daughters from Earlham, Iowa will be here to attend the funeral services. Mrs. Ephraim Bowles, died ten years ago, in their home in Quaker Valley. Since that time, the now deceased has been living with his son and other relatives. Ephraim Bowles has lived in the Quaker Valley neighborhood for twenty years. He was one of the staunch believers of the Friends’ faith and led an exemplary life. During his residency in Quaker Valley Ephraim Bowles met and won the estimation of a large circle of friends and made many acquaintances. He seldom, if ever, lost one, due to his kindly disposition and gentle nature. He had few, if any, equals in the Faith. He was reliable, true, noble, generous and in his going away, the Quaker Valley district is bereft of a grand old character whose place will not be filled for many days. Levi Bowles, the son at whose home the aged Friend died, is the store-keeper of the Inavale neighborhood*. He, like his father, is known and respected for his honesty of purpose, and strong christian character. Levi Bowles is the correspondent for the Weekly Republican, and is a good writer. This paper and its staff sorrow with the family in their sad bereavement and extend profound sympathy in this great loss. It was settled in early days by the Friends, or Quakers, as they are usually termed, and that name applied to the valley. Its native fertility is somewhat depleted, but it still ranks well with any part of Cherokee County, as a farming district. Much improvement has been made recently by fertelizing (sic) and improved methods until it is destined to hold the key to Galena and Joplin as a farming and truck growing district. The business corner known as The Quaker Valley store was opened eighteen years ago, by myself and Cabel Moore. It has been operated with varying degrees of success since that time. We now propose to change the name to Inavale [In A Vale] which the location suggests. The reason is that as Quaker Valley is in extensive place we need dissimilar names to designate the different places as Military on the Katy and Riverton on the Frisco. The name has been confused with Quaker Station on the Katy and strangers have gone there when they wanted to came (sic) here, so the good people will confer a favor if they will come to *Inavale* instead of the Quaker Valley store or Galena, either for a good share of their necessities.
