He was born on March 29, 1928, in Farley, son of Francis A. and Hester M. (Horsfield) McBride. The Rev. McBride attended rural schools in Dodge Township and Dubuque County. He graduated from St. Joseph High School, Farley, Loras College, Dubuque , and did his theological studies at the St. Paul (Minn.) Seminary. On June 6, 1953, he was ordained by the Most Rev. Loras T. Lane, auxiliary bishop of Dubuque , in Christ the King Chapel at Loras College. On June 7, 1953, he celebrated his first Solemn Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Farley. From 1969-71 he did graduate studies in pastoral ministry at Aquinas Institute, Dubuque . He was a pastor at St. Mary's Dubuque ; St. Mary's, Guttenberg; St. Joseph's, Waterloo; St. Joseph's, Marion; St. Michael's, Garber; Sacred Heart, Littleport; St. Joseph's, New Albin; Immaculate Conception, North Washington; St. John's, Waterloo; Sacred Heart Convent, Cedar Rapids; St. Isidore's, Springville; St. John's, Peosta; Holy Family, New Melleray; and at the Metropolitan Tribunal at the Chancery Office in Dubuque . He was also an instructor for 30 years in Catholic schools of the Archdiocese of Dubuque . He published several booklets - in 1970, on the history of Sacred Heart Parish, in Littleport; and in 1983, on the history of the Johns Creek Settlement (located between Farley and Cascade). On Oct. 4, 1979, he concelebrated the Mass with Pope John Paul II and helped distribute communion at the Living History Farms, Des Moines. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Dubourg Assembly of Dubuque . Surviving are a brother, Harry V. McBride, of Anamosa; two sisters, Mrs. Ray (Pearl) Scherrman and Mrs. Leon (Rosalyn) Kramer, both of Farley; a sister, Mrs. Grace M. McBride, of Farley; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Leo F. McBride. In lieu of flowers, a Rev. James J. McBride Memorial Fund has been established.
