The bodies, which floated to the surface of the lake Friday afternoon, were returned to Cherokee Saturday afternoon. Short services for Downing, who is survived by his widow and a small son, Robert, will be held at Appleyard & Boothby Funeral home here at 4 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Alfred C. Petersen, pastor of Memorial Presbyterian church, will officiate. Following the brief rites, the body will be taken to Mt. Pulaski, Ill., where church services will be conducted Tuesday. Downing, who operated, the Twentieth Century owling Alleys here, is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Harry Downing at Mt. Pulaski, and a brother, Richard Downing, of Akron, O. Downing came to Cherokee several years ago as manager of the Firestone Service Store here. Last year he purchased the bowling alley business from A.T. Nicholarsen and remodeled the alleys into one of the most modern in this section of the state. He was an enthusiastic sportsman and was active in civic affairs, retaining membership in a number of local service organizations. Final rites for the Rev. Underberg will be held at 10 o’clock on Monday morning from Visitation church at Maryhill. The body, which arrived Saturday afternoon, will remain at the Schmidt Funeral home here until 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon when it will be transferred to the church. There the body will lie in state until time for services. At 9:30 o’clock Monday morning, approximately 125 fellow priests of the diocese will kneel in the church near the body and chant the divine office for the dead. After the office, pontifical requiem mass will be celebrated by Bishop Edmond Heelan, D.D., of Sioux City, with a choir composed of the priests chanting the mass. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. H.F. Huesman of Templeton, Ia., will deliver the sermon. Burial will be in Maryhill cemetery. Devotions have been held every night recently for the Rev. Underberg and Downing and will continue Saturday night and Sunday night at 8 o’clock. Rosary will be said Saturday night at 8:30 at the funeral home. Members of the C.D.A. are requested to be present. The Rev. Underberg was born on April 30, 1893, on a farm near Mt. Carmel, IA. He finished his theological training at St. Paul seminary, St. Paul, Minn., and was ordained Sept. 22, 1919. At that time the bishop saw fit to ordain him six months before the usual time because of the need of priests and because of the Rev. Underberg’s outstanding abilities. After his ordination he served as assistant priest at Emmetsburg, Ia., Templeton, Ia., and Remsen, Ia. He was then made resident pastor at Lidderdale, Ia., in 1924. He was the first resident pastor there, starting a parish from what was a mission and opening a school. He also bought a parish house and was there eight years, accomplishing outstanding work. He came to Maryhill April 21, 1932, and was here eight years. He was pastor here longer than any other man. His accomplishments are many. He has built the Maryhill church up to one of the finest rural organizations in the state. The priest was one of a family of 14 children. Surviving brothers and sisters are Mrs. Joseph Reif, Breda, Ia.; Nick Underberg, Dedham, Ia.; Frank Underberg, Larchwood, Ia.; William Underberg, Auburn, Ia.; Aloysius Underberg and Henry Underberg, Carroll, Ia.; Edward Underberg, Springville, N.Y.; and Mrs. Mike Ludwig, Breda, Ia. Both parents preceded him in death. Finding of the bodies was reported her shortly after 1 o’clock Friday afternoon by Sheriff Clarence E. Merry of Walker, Minn., who telephoned Sheriff A.N. Tilton that Downing’s body, had been located. Shortly afterward, he called again to report the finding of the Rev. Underberg’s body. According to the Rev. John Schissel, who at this time is at Maryhill church where the Rev. Underberg served, the body was located by three Maryhill residents – Harold, George, Matt George, and Joseph N. Henke. These men had been searching the lake since Tuesday. They were in a boat with a Minnesota guide when they saw the body floating on the surface. Harold George notified the Rev. Schissel by telephone about 3 o’clock. Pete Daiker of Carroll, a cousin of the Rev. Underberg and his companion on many hunting and fishing trips, found the body of Downing. Daiker was in a boat with two or three other Carroll residents who had been aiding in the search. The bodies were reported found a considerable distance apart. The men perished Tuesday, May 28, when their boat burned and sank, about five and a half miles from Huddle’s ferry where they rented the 18-foot craft and about a half mile off Pelican Island. It is believed that their outboard motor, which apparently was being refueled, flamed up and set the boat on fire. Whether the two men were burned has not been learned here. Reports from the lake state the bodies were in good condition and not badly burned, but they have not been verified. The boat burned to the waterline. It was found the day following the men’s disappearance, with the motor still attached to a portion of the stern. Downing’s body was found about a quarter of a mile east of the point where the boat was found – a half mile off Pelican Island. The Rev. Underberg’s body reportedly was found a considerable distance away from that point, the Associated Press report setting the distance at several miles. Since the men’s disappearance, large numbers of northwest Iowa friends and relative have searched for their bodies unceasingly, dragging the lake area and using boats, launches and an airplane in their efforts to sight them.
