Description	:	One of six children of George and Beatrice (Janisse) Klosterman. He attended St. Clare Elementary School and after graduating from Assumption College School in 1944, began studies at Assumption College. With the influence of many Basilians continuing to impact upon him, Leo entered St. Basil's Novitiate, Rochester, New York in August 1946 and professed first vows 15 August 1947. Bernard Black, John Cavanaugh, John Dougherty, Patrick Lalonde, Marcel Lextrait, L.C. Edward McLean, Robert Montague, Vincent Paré, and Frederick Sohn. Leo completed his B.A. in Chemistry, which he received from the University of Western Ontario, in 1949. He then taught at Aquinas Institute, Rochester for one year, followed by two years at St. Michael's College School, Toronto. In 1952, while continuing to teach chemistry and physics at St. Michael's College School, he began theological studies at St. Basil's Seminary, Toronto. Leo was ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal James Charles McGuigan in St. Basil's Church, Toronto, on 29 June 1954. Those also ordained that year were John Callaghan, Arthur Hathaway, Brian Higgins, George Kosicki, Ronold Pazik, Denis Rowan, John Whitley, Albert Williams, and the late Francis Boehm, Joseph Miller, and Francis O'Grady. Subsequent to ordination, Leo had the following appointments: Catholic Central High School, Detroit 1955-1970 Sabbatical 1970-1971 Catholic Central High School 1971-1973 Graduate studies in Leeds and Canterbury in England and in Paris, France 1973-1977 University of St. Thomas, Houston 1977-1983 Sabbatical 1983-1984 University of St.Thomas 1984-1986 St. Mark's College, Vancouver 1986-2004 Basilian Fathers of Vancouver 2004-2005 O'Connor House, Windsor 2005-2007 By training, Leo Klosterman was a scientist. For many years he taught courses in chemistry, physics and the History of Science at Aquinas Institute, St. Michael's College School, Catholic Central High School, the University of St. Thomas, and St. Mark's College. Several of his students were awarded prizes at science fairs. And he brought the exactitude of a scientist to other dimensions of his life and ministry, where it might better be referred to as gentleness, dedication and diligence. Leo was a man of conviction, ever forthright, eventempered, and without guile. In whatever ministry he undertook, teacher, registrar, chaplain, pastor, or counselor, he was most concerned with helping others to know and love the Lord. He enjoyed his Basilian confreres and life in community. He served his confreres as Superior at the University of St. Thomas and as Rector at St. Mark's College. In local communities in which he lived, he was interested in the work and welfare of the confreres and did all he could to ensure a pleasant community atmosphere. To his interest in the History of Science, for which he earned a doctorate from the University of Kent at Canterbury, he added an avid interest in his family history. He worked assiduously on the genealogy of both sides of the family. Leo had great pride in his family and was most interested in how his faith had been handed down through previous generations. Being the scientist that he was, he would say, "This is my spiritual DNA." It comes as no surprise that the Eucharist was central to his life as a religious and a priest. The care with which he approached matters of science was exceeded by the care he devoted to his preparation for and celebration of the Eucharist. As pastor of St. Ignatius of Antioch Parish, housed as St. Mark's College in Vancouver, he was known for his conscientious and generous response to his pastoral responsibilities. As Bud Paré noted in his homily at the Mass of Christian Burial, "His homilies were always carefully prepared, written out and well delivered and his celebration of Mass was an eloquent expression of his deep faith." In his eulogy at the wake service, Jim Carruthers focused on the "rooms" of Leo's life: his family, the Basilian community and professional life, his retirement room, and his room in God's house. We have faith and hope that he now lives in the room God has prepared for him and we pray that he is helping to prepare a room for each of us. Leo is predeceased by his parents and his brothers Lawrence, George and Leonard. To his sister, Margaret, his brother, Joseph, his many nieces, nephews, friends, and former colleagues, the Basilian Fathers offer their sympathy and a promise of prayers.
