He was preceded in death by his brothers, JM, Isaac and Ben, a sister Mary, a daughter-in-law, Patricia Sanford Forrester, one grandchild, Debra Forrester, and one great-grandchild, Emma Kaye Webb. His parents were John and Elizabeth Forrester of Greer, S.C. He was preceded in death by his brothers, JM, Isaac and Ben, a sister Mary, a daughter-in-law, Patricia Sanford Forrester, one grandchild, Debra Forrester, and one great-grandchild, Emma Kaye Webb. He graduated from Greer High School and Cohen Electrical Technologies School in Chicago, IL. Walt moved to Spartanburg with his young bride, Dot (Catherine Roberta Barnett), in 1946. He began his career with Duke Power and joined the Arkwright Mill family in 1947. He served as Plant Engineer for Arkwright until 1980 when he was forced to retire following a heart attack. His commitment and devotion to Arkwright and its' employees continued until his death. He is survived by Dot, his beloved wife of almost 66 years and three children; Gerald and wife Linda of Moore, Sandy Hobbs and husband Steve of North Augusta, and Rickey and wife Lorraine of Pauline. He was Papa to five grandchildren, one step-grandchild, twelve great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. They are: Michael Forrester (Leigh) and sons, Chandler and Chance of Spartanburg; Gia Atwood (Steve) and children, Trace, Caleigh and Rheagan of Simpsonville; Ansley Webb (Cameron) and children Colby, Chase, Cade, Casen and Brynne of Bentonville, Arkansas; Allen Hobbs (Caroline) and children Will and Lila of Durham, NC; and Paige Forrester of Pauline. David Switzer of Wellford was his step-grandson and his children are John Paul and Winton. Papa Forrester showered his family with treasures made by his hands and with the gifts of his presence and time. He was a steadfast fan, spectator, booster, and chaperone. He was interested in everything his family members did. His absolute devotion to his family and friends was an amazing gift that has helped to shape their lives. If you were loved by Papa, you were loved deeply, supported completely and prayed for constantly. Walt and his family joined El Bethel Methodist Church in 1950. From his faithful service there, he went on to become devoted to using his talents to serve his Lord through work with the Spartanburg district and the South Carolina Methodist Conference for more than five decades. He was a dedicated Lay Speaker and later a Lay Minister. For decades he ran the Information Desk at the SC United Methodist Annual Conferences. He served as the pastor for Christ Church in Boiling Springs for about five years and for the last 16 years was the pastor at Cross Anchor-Yarborough Chapel UMC and at Hebron UMC. His love for these churches, their members, and their communities was deep and meaningful. His relationships with them and service to them greatly enriched his life. In addition to his ministry, Walt was active throughout his life in service to numerous civic and non-profit groups, such as the Jaycees, and Services to Families. He volunteered to work to better the lives of children and the needy of this community throughout his life. He was selfless in his service to others and always ready and available to help. The family received friends from 6:00–8:00 PM on Monday, March 5, 2012 at Dunbar Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at Dunbar Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Reverend Jack Caldwell and Reverend Paul Harmon. Interment was in the Cross Anchor United Methodist Church Cemetery; 11641 Hwy 56, Enoree, SC. His grandchildren served as pallbearers. The Walt Forrester Sunday School Class of El Bethel UMC and the Arkwright Mills supper group served as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the charity of your choice or to Cross Anchor-Yarborough Chapel UMC or Hebron UMC; both at PO Box 99, Roebuck, SC 29376.
