One of the best known exponents of the gospel in Liscomb township, Marshall county, is George William Biersborn, a man who has led a life of consistent endeavor along conservative lines. He was born in Michigan, November 28, 1870, and is the son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Ilers) Biersborn, both born in Germany, in which country they spent their childhood, emigrating to America when single and locating in Michigan, and there they were married and remained until they came to Marshall county, Iowa, in 1876 and located in Liscomb. He was engaged in copper mining in Michigan and in the charcoal business in western Wyoming and was very successful both as a copper miner in Michigan and in the charcoal business, at that time furnishing charcoal for the smelters in Omaha. He lived retired in Liscomb, though he owned a good farm here of two hundred and sixty acres in Marshall and Grundy counties. In politics he was a Republican and he became an inﬂuential citizen in this community, being one of the substantial and worthy citizens of the county. He was liberal in his religious views and his wife is a member of the Reformed church. His death occurred in 1897, and his widow now lives in Liscomb, where she has a host of admiring friends, being a woman of many commendable characteristics, and her beautiful, modern, neatly-kept and well-furnished home is often the gathering place of her neighbors and friends. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Biersborn, named as follows: Charles, deceased, leaving two sons, Byron and Charles; George William; Henry is an auctioneer and lives in Liscomb; Elmer F. is a rural mail carrier; Alice is the wife of H. H. Hitch, of Brainard, Minnesota. George W. Biersborn, of this review, was reared at home and received his education in the common schools and the Liscomb high school, and graduated from the literary department of Drake University in 1896. Thus well equipped for his life work, he began teaching, which vocation he followed successfully for four years and was principal of the Liscomb high school, where he taught three years, the other term being taught in the country. He ﬁnally turned his attention to the ministry and became a profound student of theology, and he has become known as one of the ablest, most loyal and conscientious expounders of the gospel and one of the leading pulpit orators of central Iowa, having preached in the Christian church for ten years, being now located at Garwin. He also preaches at Bethel Grove, and has also preached at Liscomb, Union and Bevins Grove and has frequently been called upon to preach funeral sermons all over the county. He is a member of Liscomb Lodge No. 242, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Politically, he is a Republican, and a Prohibitionist in political sentiment. Rev. Biersborn was married on June 22, 1909, to Ida Bixby, of Liscomb; she is a lady of many commendable attributes, being quite a musician and has long been a favorite with a wide circle of friends. She is the daughter of L. L. and Thursa (Hauser) Bixby, early settlers of Marshall county, where they were prominent and inﬂuential citizens for many years, the father dying in July, 1902, the mother still living. Since March, 1901, Rev. Mr. Biersborn has been very successfully engaged in the hardware and grocery business at Liscomb, having built up a very extensive and satisfactory trade, enjoying the conﬁdence and good will of everybody in the community and always carrying a large and carefully selected line of goods. He has been very successful as a business man, and he is also the owner of a valuable, productive and well improved farm of one hundred and seventy-four acres in the vicinity of Liscomb. In 1905 he made a trip to the Holy Land, journeying not only through Palestine, but also through Egypt and Europe, during which he attended the world's Sunday school convention at Jerusalem, and in 1907 he made. a second trip through Europe, during which he visited the early home of his parents in Germany, making a visit to various other places of interest. Being a profound student of history and a keen observer, he gained a great deal of good from these sojourns abroad, and he is a most interesting and entertaining talker of his travels, or, in fact, anything, for he is a widely read man, familiar with the world's best literature and he keeps informed on the current topics of the day, being a progressive citizen in all that the term implies and a man of inestimable value to his community.
