Description	:	DOUDS — Rev. Harold E. Harryman, 102, of Douds, died Jan. 16, 2010, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua. He was born at home, near Douds, the son of Francis Slater and Jennie Hill Harryman. Harold married Ethel I. Young on June 30, 1936, in Prairie City. She died Dec. 10, 2004. He was born at home, near Douds, the son of Francis Slater and Jennie Hill Harryman. Harold married Ethel I. Young on June 30, 1936, in Prairie City. She died Dec. 10, 2004. Harold grew up in the Douds area, attended rural school and graduated from Douds-Leando Consolidated School in 1927. He briefly attended Iowa State College, taught school at Valley Country School for three years then attended Iowa State Teachers College, now UNI, and taught junior high at Delhi. Harold earned his B.A. Degree in 1936, taught junior high school and later high school in Cedar Falls. He returned to help farm following the death of his father in 1938. Harold began a lay ministry in 1947, then attended Perkins School of Theology in Dallas, Texas, and received his ordination as a deacon and then as an elder in 1955. He then served as pastor or associate pastor of many churches, including: Milton, Cantril, Mount Sterling and Lebanon in Van Buren County. He also served at the First United Methodist Church in Ames, First Methodist Church, Newton, as well as pulpits in Seymour and Promise City. He retired in 1974. Harold traveled with his family through most of the 50 states, Europe, the Holy Land, Mexico and took cruises through the Caribbean and the Panama Canal. He and Ethel wintered in Florida for more than 20 years. At an early age, Harold united with the Leando Methodist Church, which is now Christ United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Lions Clubs, Douds Community Club, Van Buren Farm Bureau and Methodist Men of Douds. While in Florida, he participated in labor projects with Habitat for Humanity. The Department of Elder Affairs of the State of Iowa honored him as an Iowa Centenarian in 2007. He is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Rodgers (Dean) of Marengo and Shirley Younker (Donald) of Green Valley, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Lynn Rodgers, Mark Younker and Rodney Younker; one great-grandson, Ryan Younker; nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Lucy A. Brewster Harryman; his wife, Ethel; son, Merlin; and daughter-in-law, Marilyn Harryman; four brothers, Harvey, Joe, Dewey and Lucien; and four sisters, Lottie Ruth Harryman, Esther Moore, Mary Loveless and Josephine Horn Lewis. His body has been cremated. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds; Rev. Ann Donat officiating. Burial will be in Leando Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 9:30-11 a.m. immediately preceding the memorial service. Memorials to Christ United Methodist Church of Douds, Community Club or the Leando Cemetery Fund may be left at the church or sent to the family at 685 W. Main St., Marengo, Iowa 52301. Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, is in charge of arrangements.
