Monson, 76, former pastor of the Trinity English Lutheran church and a pioneer North Dakota pastor, died at 4:45 o'clock this morning at the home of Rev. Lars Foss, at Driscoll. Death was due to heart disease. Rev. Monson was one of the most widely known churchmen in North Dakota, having had charge of parishes at Kindred, Williston and Hazen from 1896 to 1912 when he became pastor of the congregation at Bismarck in 1922. He resigned as pastor of Trinity Lutheran church in 1929 because of his advanced age but had continued to be active in the work of the church and had frequently served as supply pastor at Almont and Sims in Morton county since that time. H also was much in demand for special events in churches in this area and had participated in a number of ceremonies, such as cornerstone layings, during the last year. Besides his widow, he leaves 10 children, three sons and seven daughters, and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services have not been arranged but probably will be held Monday or Tuesday, the time depending on the arrival of two daughters from Washington, D. C. Rev. Monson was apparently in good health when he went to Driscoll Thursday to visit his old friend Rev. Foss. About four o'clock this morning, however, Rev. Foss was aroused to find Rev. Monson in apparent distress. It was decided to bring him to Bismarck and Rev. Foss went to get his automobile, but Rev. Monson died before a start could be made for a local hospital. Ingvar Grothe Monson was born at Lardral, Norway, and came to the United States with his parents when seven years old, immigrating to South Dakota. Later, the family moved to Leroy, Minn. In 1869 Rev. Monson began attendance at Luther college, Decorah, Iowa, and continued his attendance there until 1876. Later he attended Luther Seminary at Madison, Wis., being ordained to the ministry in 1887. In 1887-88 he was pastor of a congregation at Sioux Rapids, Iowa. From 1888 to '92 he was at Wausau, Wis.; from '92 to '96 at Amherst, Wis., and in '96 he came to North Dakota, accepting a charge at Kindred. After serving 16 years at Kindred, he went to Williston in 1912 and was there until 1918, when he became pastor of the church at Hazen. In 1922 he came to Bismarck as pastor of the Trinity English Lutheran church. In 1882 Rev. Monson was married but his wife died four years later. One child, Miss Johanna Monson, Bismarck, was born to this union. In 1888 he was married again. Children born to this union were Herman W. Monson, Moorhead, Minn.; Mrs. Arndt Vaaler, Willmar, Minn.' Mrs. O. E. Westberg, Williston; Luther J. Monson, Beach; Mrs. J. E. Stokke, LaCrosse, Wis.; Mrs. Mack Tellinga, Bismarck; Esther M. Monson and Anna H. Monson of Washington, D. C., and Kristian O. Monson, superintendent of schools at Carson, Grant county. Brothers and sisters of Rev. Monson are Ole Monson, Grothe, and Mrs. David Roe, Elk Point, S. D., Mons Grothe, Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. A. Hauge, Dennison, Minn.; and Mrs. Andrew Hawkins, Le Roy, Minn. Grothe was one of the Monson family names and some of Rev. Monson's brothers chose to adopt it as a surname. In addition to his work as a pastor, Rev. Monson gained fame throughout North Dakota and this synod of the Lutheran church as an eloquent preacher, and scholar and author.
