He was born in Pulaski County in 1854 and has resided in Carroll for the past 57 years. On January 12, 1887, Mr. Carper was married to Viola C. Shockley. Carper, 89, died at his home in Hillsville following a number of years of declining health. He was born in Pulaski County in 1854 and has resided in Carroll for the past 57 years. On January 12, 1887, Mr. Carper was married to Viola C. Shockley. To this union was born five daughters and one son. Being a teacher of music for 70 years, Professor Carper became widely known and respected. He has held singing schools in every nook and corner of the county as well as adjoining counties. During his 36 years of ministry he was pastor of Missionary Baptist Churches in Ashe and Alleghany counties, N.C. and the following churches in this section; Pleasant Grove, Stone Mountain, Mt. Hebron, Pine Grove, Hillsville, Meadows of Dan, Liberty Grove, Floyd Courthouse and Sylvatus, having helped build a number of them. Riding horseback to serve these churches, he was paid a meager sum of $40 per year. Before retiring 26 years ago he had the record of baptizing more than 1500 persons and since being authorized to perform wedding ceremonies had married more than 3000 couples. Hillsville Lodge presented a Masonic pin to Mr. Carper in recognition of his 50 year membership in 1936. He is survived by his widow and the following children; Mrs. Mollie Harding, Mrs. Minnie Moore, Mrs. Josie Greene, all of Hamilton, Ohio, Mr. J. H. Gibson, Richmond, Miss Baretta Carper, Petersburg, and J.C. Carper, Jr. Hillsville, three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were conducted in the home at eleven o'clock Tuesday by Rev. O.E. Ward with Charlie Burnett in charge of the song service. Masonic funeral rites were held at the Wilkinson Cemetery in So. End, Hillsville.
