ADAMS, died, at his residence, in York district, on the 18th August, in the 71st year of his age and 48th of his ministry. In recording the death of this truly excellent man and eminent servant of Christ it is desirable that some notice should be taken of his valuable life and labors. From the best information in the writer's possession, it appears that James Adams, the Grandfather of the deceased, came from Scotland [Northern Ireland] to the Province of Pennsylvania about the year 1740, and that his son William Adams, father of the deceased, was when he landed about 7 years old. The family settled in Cumberland county [PA], where they lived till after the death of the grandfather of the Rev. James S. Adams, which occurred in 1752. In 1756, William Adams removed to Carolina, and shortly after married and settled on Crowder's Creek in York District, So. Ca. where he resided during his life. Being one of the first settlers and strongly attached from principle and education, to the Presbyterian Church, he felt a lively interest in securing the means of grace and in establishing the Congregation of Bethel. The Rev. James S. Adams was the fifth of a family of eleven children. He was born on the 12th of September, 1779. Evincing in childhood, promising talents, his parents determined to give a him a liberal education. He was placed with the best teachers that the unsettled state of the country afforded. After finishing the study of Languages, he was sent to the School of the Rev. James Hall, D.D., under whose care he studied the sciences. While there he was made a subject of renewing grace. After some time he entered upon the study of theology under the Rev. James McRee. D.D., and in the Spring of 1795 he was licensed by the Presbytery of Orange [NC]. The first year of his ministry he was sent as a Missionary to the New Settlement in East Tennessee. The Indians becoming hostile, the people, with their Minister, were compelled to fly for safety. In 1797 he was employed by the Congregational Church of Dorchester, near Charleston. Here he was ordained and installed May 8, 1799, as their Pastor. In this place he labored six years, greatly beloved and eminently successful as an Ambassador for Christ. Here he married and lost by death his first wife -- the daughter of Thomas Smith, Esq., a pious and influential member of the Dorchester Church. In 1801 he was again married to a daughter of the Rev. James McEwen of Mecklenburg County, N.C., with whom he was spared 42 years, and blessed with as large as measure of enjoyment as is allowed to man on his pilgrimage. His worthy consort yet survives him. They were blessed with a family of eight children, all of whom are members of the visible Church, and one an efficient Minister, of Jesus Christ. After preaching to Beershaba and Olney congregations, for several years, he became the Pastor of Bethel church, in the year 1811. This church enjoyed his labors for 29 years. In consequence of the infirmities of age, in the year 1840 he was constrained to retire from the arduous labor necessary in so large a congregation. But, in the goodness of God, he was enabled frequently to preach, and regularly to attend on the ordinances of the sanctuary. The last Sabbath of his life was spent in the church, hearing and rejoicing in the same Gospel which he had so long and faithfully proclaimed in the same place, and closed the exercises of the day by a solemn and fervent prayer to the Great Head of the Church, for the outpouring of his Spirit upon all the people. His death was sudden, and, to his family, unexpected. For a few days, he had felt somewhat unwell, but was not confined to his bed. On the day of his death, he mingled with his family as usual. Late in the afternoon, as was his custom, he took his seat in the pew. In a few moments, his family alarmed by a groan, came to him; he was still sitting in his chair, but the spirit had fled -- he breathed not again! Thus did his covenant Redeemer gather him home, "as a shock of corn cometh in, in his season," sparing him in mercy the agonies of a lingering death. As a man, he was cheerful benevolent and just; as a husband, tender and kind ; affectionate as a father; a firm confiding friend, and an indulgent master. As a Christian, he was uniformly and eminently pious; his zeal and devotion was untiring; and he probably enjoyed as much of the consolation of religion and of faith in lively exercise, as the most favoured children of God, in any age. He seemed pre-eminently to live by faith, and to rejoice in God. His talents for preaching were of a high order, uniting a lively imagination with good judgment and a graceful delivery, he was always impressive and often truly eloquent. In exhibiting the doctrines of redeeming grace, he was peculiarly happy. Clearness and precision marked his pulpit efforts. Having determined to know nothing but Christ and him crucified, he preached to perishing sinners with a zeal and pathos becoming an ambassador for Christ. His labors in the gospel were greatly blessed to the conviction and conversion of sinner. The church under his ministration was favoured with frequent revivals and numerous accessions; and it may be truly said that no minister was more beloved by his own charge and his Christian acquaintances than he was. "Mark the perfect man, and consider the upright, for the end of that man is peace."
