"Pastor Jim" was a longtime pastor and evangelist, serving churches and leading evangelistic services throughout the Midwest. He was born in Kopperl, Texas, on Dec. 10, 1931, to Oliver Perry and Lillie Lee (Boyd)Carmon, who divorced when he was 12. Abandoned by his father and abused by his stepfather, he left home at the age of 13, working his way through the Texas panhandle. He had attended 12 schools by the time he was given a home in Albany, Texas, with Effie and Lynn Pate, the owners of a boarding house where he had found a room. Jim graduated Albany High School in 1950 and joined the U.S. Air Force. Six months later, he married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Jean Marsee, who died two months later. During the Korean Conflict, Jim was a senior ground radio repairman, earning Airman First Class stripes before being honorably discharged after four years, including a year in Korea. He was converted to Christ in 1953 and subsequently attended Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he graduated with a Th.G. degree. There he also met Norma Bailey of Webster, Wis., to whom he was married in 1955. Jim was ordained to the Christian ministry in 1958 through the Baptist General Conference. His pastorates were at Bethany Baptist, Mason, Wis., 1958-61; Fox River Baptist, Appleton, Wis., 1961-65; First Christian & Missionary Alliance, Billings, Mont., 1965-68; and Lund Covenant, rural Dresden, Kans., 1968-74. In 1971, Jim founded the Christ for All Evangelistic Association and became in 1974 a full-time evangelist, traveling nationwide and in Canada. He was accompanied by Jim-Jim, a ventriloquism figure, who died in a commercial airline luggage incident, and later by J.C,, also a ventriloquism figure. Three of his daughters joined him as song evangelists and counselors at various times as he flew his single-engine Mooney airplane to camps and churches. Jim was director of extension and church growth for the Christian & Missionary Alliance in Arlington, Texas, 1985-87. He then became pastor of Old Cheney Alliance, Lincoln, Nebr., where he served 1987-1990. He was pastor of Yellowstone Community, Savage, Mont., 1990-98. He retired for a year then became pastor of First Baptist, Falun, Wis. After seven years at Falun as pastor, he changed positions with his associate pastor. Declining health forced his retirement from formal ministry in 2009, at the age of 78. In 2009, Jim and Norma returned to Oberlin, where they own a home, to be near daughter Vickie and her family. Jim enjoyed playing golf, reading history and watching westerns. He liked to hunt, fish and walk. He also enjoyed recent mission trips to the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, and Thailand. But his best joy was serving others in the name of Jesus, a ministry that he continued as long as he had strength. Jim was also preceded in death in 1936 by brothers Orlander, 14, and Floyd, 10. In addition to his wife, Norma, Jim is survived by his daughters and their husbands and grandchildren and their spouses: Vickie and Armin Sowers of rural Dresden, Kans., children Darrick and Kay Dee Sowers, Yancy and Amanda Sowers; Yvonne and Dennis Schultz of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, children Hadassah (Schultz) and Dan Lux, Adina Schultz; Janet and Wylie Anderson of rural Angora, Nebr., children Lacy (Anderson) and Clint Hoksbergen, Kelsie Anderson, Wil Anderson; and Janell and John Meyers of Hamtramck, Mich., children Amanda (Meyers) and Harold Anteau, Joel and Katelyn Meyers, and Seth Meyers. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Kellie Sowers, Kyra and Kaden Sowers, Anna Hoksbergen, Nathan and Olivia Anteau; a sister, Ruth Carver, Athens, Texas; two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
