He was born on March 6, 1928, in Earl, N.C., to the late Paul Adylotte and Ruth Adelia Green Turner. He was a graduate of Blacksburg High School, Limestone College (Class of 1959) and earned his Master of Divinity in 1962 from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He proudly served as pastor of Midway Baptist Church, Gaffney; Mayo Baptist Church, Mayo; Eastview Baptist Church, Rock Hill; Green Cove Springs Baptist Church, Green Cove Springs, Fl.; and Ridge Baptist Church, Summerville. He retired from the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, having served in Delaware and in South Carolina. After retirement from NAMB, he served as interim pastor at Calvary Baptist Church, Bethany Baptist Church and Goucher Baptist Church in Gaffney. During his pastorates, his late wife, Lucy Montez Mason Turner, worked alongside him with loving support of each ministry. Rev. Turner took a strong interest in community and was active in the Rotary Club in the communities in which he resided. He was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sallie Wilkins of Blacksburg and Madge Haynes of Charlotte, and a great-granddaughter, Marisol Arrillaga. Surviving are two daughters, Donna Turner Williams and her husband, Marion, of Spartanburg and Dr. Beverly Turner Ellington of Easley; a son, Joe Paul Turner Jr. and his wife, Nancy Bielefeld Turner, of Mt. Pleasant; a brother, Jim Turner of Blacksburg; three sisters, Frances Gallman of Pensacola, Fla., Rachael Brezeale and her husband, David, of Simpsonville and Carol Martin and her husband, Robert, of Blacksburg; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Williams Arrillaga and her husband, Dr. Abenamar Arrillaga, of Asheville, N.C., Russell Ryan Williams and his wife, Monica Houser, of Memphis, Tn., Jason Andrew Turner of Philadelphia, Pa., Sara Anne Ellington of Gastonia, N.C., and Shannon Nicole Turner of Mt. Pleasant; and six great- grandchildren, Lucy Isabella Arrillaga, Andres Martin Arrillaga, Johan Rhodes Arrillaga, India Noella Arrillaga, all of Asheville, Turner Lee Williams of Memphis and Abe Arrillaga of Greenville. Services to celebrate his life were held 3 p.m. Sunday, April 12, at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, 412 McKowns Mountain Road, Gaffney, S.C. Internment followed in Frederick Memorial Gardens!
