Rev. John Bruner, a pioneer M.E. minister of this county who was engaged in the ministry in this section for over half a century, and was superannuated in 1894, died at his home west of New Lebanon, Monday night of general debility and diseases incident to old age. Rev. Bruner had a serious attack of pneumonia, last winter and never fully recovered from that attack, and although he was since able to be around his decline since that time has been gradual. Rev. Bruner was born in Monroe County, October 31, 1828, and was reared on a farm in that county. He attended Asbury University, now DePauw University at Greencastle and was graduated from that institution in 1859. He came to Sullivan county that year, and was a teacher in the academy at New Lebanon for two years. One of the instructors in the school was Miss Rebecca S. Mason, a daughter of Rev. Anthony S. Mason, and she became the wife of Mr. Bruner on April 5, 1860, the bride's father, Rev. Mason ofiiciating. In 1861, Mr. Bruner united with the Annual M. E. Conference and continued in the ministry until 1894 when he was superannuated and had since resided on his farm near New Lebanon. His service extended through southern Indiana, and he preached in churches, log cabins and private residences and rendered a great service to the church. He is survived by his wife, four sons, Mason Bruner of Linton, Frank Bruner of Graysville, Bert Bruner of Palestine, Ills., and Hugh Bruner of Indianapolis, three daughters, Mrs. E. P. Walker of this city, Maude Bruner of New Lebanon and Margaret Thompson of Clinton. The funeral was held this morning at ten o'clock at the M. E. church in New Lebanon and was conducted by the pastor. Rev. Caylor. Interment at the Camp Ground cemetery. _________________________________
