Description	:	Rev John McCrary (or McCreary) was the son of Captain James McCrary and Isabella Griffin. He married on 3/17/1793 in NC to Ruth Wasson (b.4/16/1776 Rowan Co, NC, d.12/10/1859 Keosaqua, Van Buren Co, IA, buried in the McCrary-Lippincott Cemetery. He married on 3/17/1793 in NC to Ruth Wasson (b.4/16/1776 Rowan Co, NC, d.12/10/1859 Keosaqua, Van Buren Co, IA, buried in the McCrary-Lippincott Cemetery. She was the daughter of James Wasson and Catherine_______. John was one of the organizing elders of the "New Light" branch of what was the Congregational Christian denomination in "Old Liberty", IN at the New Liberty Church (about 3 miles east of Cynthiana, IN). The McCrarys, Wassons, and Davis's had all lived in Maury Co, TN and all migrated together to southern Indiana in 1812. Just a year after they moved there John faught at the Battle of Tippecanoe. On 8/12/1831 John McCrary became pastor of the New Liberty Church. It is significant that all the children of Ruth and John McCreary and all of the Wassons were strong adherents of the "New Light" Christian faith lead by Joseph Wasson (whos followers were called "Wassonites" and evolved into the Congregatioanl-Christian denomination) as differentiated from the Disciples of Christ that were known as the "Campbellites". All this can be found in the "Genealogy Newspaper Columns of Robert E.Thurman". Call the Willard Library in Evansville, IN to obtain the book at 1-812-425-4309. Rev John McCrary performed the wedding ceremony for my 3rd great grandfather's (Abner Nelson Long) brother John Franklin Long and Sarah Alexander Patton, at the New Liberty Church in "Old Liberty", IN on 2/23/1826. Rev John McCrary was not an ordained minister -- many of them weren't. John and Ruth (Wasson) McCreary got talked into moving to Illinois as a lot of the old folks were persuaded by the young and adventurous to move. So they moved with a lot of their children's families to McDonough Co, IL (the Spoon River Antholagy area) from the Cynthiana/Owensville area of Indiana. Abner Nelson Long moved his family along with them. The McCreary's only were there for a year then they moved to the "Wisconsin Territory" and settled in Van Buren County, IA.
