Read More	Fostoria Weekly News 3-25-1870 p. 3 Died Davis – At his residence in Fostoria, March 21, 1870, Rev. John Davis, aged 78 years, 5 months and 3 days. The deceased, in his youth, learned the hatter's trade, and throughout life he was known as John Davis, the hatter. He entered the ministry as an itinerant Methodist preacher, over half a century ago. Some thirty-two years ago, he joined the United Brethren Church and has been constantly engaged as a minister. He attended thirty-one sessions of the Sandusky Conference and served in the capacity of Elder for many years. Father Davis traversed the forests of Ohio, preaching Christ, and Him crucified, enduring great hardships and privations, traveling almost constantly on horseback; often having to ford streams and pass through dismal swamps. On the 25th day of October, 1815, he was married to Mrs. Harriet Hudson, with whom he lived happily for over fifty-three years until separated by death. Father Davis was somewhat eccentric in his manner but very earnest in the pulpit. He had a directness and power that never failed to secure attention. We remember some 25 years ago of being at a camp meeting and while Father Davis was preaching an old gentleman in the congregation arose and attempted to make a reply. He merely made the remark "the hit pigeon always flutters," and proceeded with his discourse, as if nothing had happened. Some of his quaint illustrations and anecdotes left a lasting impressing on the minds of his hearers. He gave his opinion on all matters, candidly; there was no misunderstanding him; he was committed on the side of right. He had enjoyed remarkable good health throughout his whole life; but when taken down with his last sickness he said, "My work is finished. I have fought the good fight and am now prepared to meet my Master." He died in great peace, quietly leaning on his Savior's arm. Death to him had no terrors; he shuddered not at passing the cold waters of Jordan, for on the other shore he was to meet that blood washed throng that John in his vision saw. May God in His infinite mercy keep watch over the aged partner of his bosom until she is called to meet him in a better land. The funeral took place at the U.B. Church, on last Wednesday and was attended by a large concourse of sympathizing friends. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Alvan Rose. A family mourn their loss; the community feel sad; the Church has lost one of its main pillars. He was one of the pioneer preachers of Ohio but he has now gone to his rest. May his brethren in the ministry imitate his pious example.
