J[ohn] G[raham] Eckles died in Porterville last evening, after a long and painful illness. Funeral services were held to-day at five o'clock. Mr. Eckles was a man that will be missed, for whatever he found to do he did with his might. He was active in religious work, in politics, in whatever he deemed good for the community in which he lived. He came to Tulare from Kansas with his family about twelve years ago. In that state he served as a member of the legislature, and was otherwise honored by his neighbors. After coming to Tulare he was pastor of the Congregational church and under his charge that church prospered abundantly. For four years he was postmaster of Tulare and in that capacity he gave complete satisfaction to the public. Removing later to Porterville he established the Review [newspaper] and, with the aid of his sons, has conducted that paper since, working all the time his health would permit. Mr. Eckles had not been in good health for several years, and within the past year or two had tried several resorts of the state but nothing that could be done proved a permanent benefit. A few weeks ago he was taken to the Deer Creek Springs and for awhile appeared to gain, but he was taken home to die. Mr. Eckles leaves a wife and several children to mourn his loss, and his death will be a personal loss to many people in various communities where he has lived. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Daily Tulare Register (Tulare, California) July 5, 1900 (Thursday) PORTERVILLE. Funeral of Mr. Eckles. Porterville, July 4th, 1900. Death came at last on Monday evening at 5 o'clock and kindly released another friend and neighbor, Mr. Eckles, from a prolonged and agonizing sickness most patiently borne. Everything a living wife and most devoted children could do to lessen and alleviate his extreme suffering has been done and owing to his natural reserve and sensitiveness as to having others than his own loved ones care for him, made it harder for them. Mrs. Eckles is always frail but strength has been given her to remain where he wanted her, always close to his side. The Masons took charge of the funeral exercises which took place on Tuesday afternoon at 5 o'clock. Religious services were held in the Congregational church. Short but most appropriate remarks were made by the Rev. J. A. Milligan of the Congregational church and J. M. Taylor of the M. E. church, after which the Masons took charge and performed their ritual ceremony at the cemetery. Mr. Eckles' gentle, kindly life, the short period of it passed in Porterville, has had its lesson in teaching how patient a man can bear himself and work bravely on always in physical pain and weakness but ever with the kindly smile and cheerful word for all.
