John Sidwell was laid to rest at Mt. Orab, November 14, 1901. He was born in Adams County, Ohio October, 10, 1809 and died November 12, 1901 aged 92 years, 1 month and 2 days. He was united in marriage with Miss Jane Bennington March 10, 1829 and of this union three children were born. One of these two grown daughters preceded him to the spirit land. One son the Rev. Henry Sidwell lives in your midst. This wife and mother passed away March 4, 1835. On July 16, 1835 he was married to Miss Mary Ann Webb . There were no children of this marriage. Mary Ann Sidwell passed away on June 4, 1837. He was again united in marriage with Miss Melvina Clutter April 15, 1838 and of this union seven children were born. One through coming to man's estate has preceded him. Three girls and four boys together with with the aged wife and mother mourn his absence from the home. Sixty years ago he united with the church of the United Brethren in Christ; commenced preaching soon after and has been a faithful toiler in the Lord's harvest field since that time. He has preached perhaps more funeral sermons than any man in Brown County. His lamp was trimmed and burning. Shortly before the end came , he said "If it was God's will he would love to go to the church and tell the people again about the Christ life and to repeat the assurance that to him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me on my throne and that Jesus is the way the truth and the life". Those who remain are his aged wife, four sons, three daughters, 14 grand children, 32 great grand children and 4 great great grand children. The State of Ohio was six years old when he was born. He had reached the age of manhood before a railroad was built in the U.S. Bro. Sidwell resided in the Mt. Orab area since 1866 and during our long acquaintance with him found him to be an honest Christian man and highly respected by all who knew him.
