Description	:	Born in New York City to parents John Nestor Sharp and Susan (Smith) Sharp. According to a letter his father wrote in 1889, he ran away from home to serve in the Civil War, under the name of "John Miller", when he would not let him enlist. He also stated that his son served in the Army Corps of Engineers by Savannah GA. (I am still tracking this information down.) Confirmed "John Miller' enlisted in New York City October 11, 1861 in Co. 1, N.Y. Engineers at 18 years of age. He reenlisted throughout the entire... Read More	Born in New York City to parents John Nestor Sharp and Susan (Smith) Sharp. According to a letter his father wrote in 1889, he ran away from home to serve in the Civil War, under the name of "John Miller", when he would not let him enlist. He also stated that his son served in the Army Corps of Engineers by Savannah GA. (I am still tracking this information down.) Confirmed "John Miller' enlisted in New York City October 11, 1861 in Co. 1, N.Y. Engineers at 18 years of age. He reenlisted throughout the entire war duration. It appeared he mustered out at Hilton Head South Carolina July 19th 1865, but, he actually was discharged July 3rd, 1865 at Hilton Head according to Fold3 military records. He next appears in NYC and is married to Martha. His Death Notice stated he started his ministry in this city for three years. (He married Martha there in 1867.) His occupation is listed as "Minister of the Gospel" in the 1870 census in Livingston, Essex, NJ, their next residence. His daughter Mary was born in 1872 and his son was born in 1873 in Roseland, New Jersey. His ministry took him last, to Canterbury, Windham CT, the ancestral home state of his wife, Martha Ann Weed. He passed in 1876. CT cemetery records have shown his daughter died young of consumption, shortly after he passed: Minnie D.E. Sharp 1872-1877, also buried in Plains cemetery. (His wife remarried two years after his death to Rev. Seymour A. Baker and they resided in Washington State and then Wynadotte County, Kansas. It is unknown if his remaining children knew their grandfather John Nestor Sharp, residing in Leavenworth KS, or not.)
