Description	:	The Rev. JOHN S. BOWLUS, 93, well-known retired farmer and minister died at his home, near Jefferson Sunday at 12:15 p.m. after an illness of six weeks. He was a son of the late Franklin L. and Sarah Beachley Bowlus and was born on and resided on the home farm all of his life. Rev. Read More	The Rev. JOHN S. BOWLUS, 93, well-known retired farmer and minister died at his home, near Jefferson Sunday at 12:15 p.m. after an illness of six weeks. He was a son of the late Franklin L. and Sarah Beachley Bowlus and was born on and resided on the home farm all of his life. Rev. Bowlus was a member of Pleasant View Church of the Brethren since 1895 and was ordained a minister of the church, February 2, 1902 and for many years served as Elder of the Pleasant View Church near Burkittsville as well as the Brownsville Church in Washington County. He attended the Broad Run School for eight years and for several years the Burkittsville and also attended Maryland Collegiate Institute of Union Bridge before the institution became Blue Ridge College and was moved to New Windsor. Rev. Bowlus was not only active in farm and church work but was a director of the Brethren Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Hagerstown since 1917 and was re-elected to another fourth term this month and was elected President of the Board in 1923 and served in that office until he became President Emeritus in 1964 and until the past two years, had the record of being present at every by-monthly meeting. When he went on the board in 1917, he succeeded one of the founders of the company, his father-in-law, the late Joseph M. Rowland. Rev. Bowlus was also very active in lower Midletown Valley as a public sale clerk. On Secember 20, 1904 he married the former Bertha Louise Rowland who predeceased him, March 30, 1960. Surviving him are four children, Mrs. Grace B. Kneess, Kensington; Miss Sarah E. Bowlus, Miss Ruth L. Bowlus, both at home and Emmert R. Bowlus, Frederick; one sister, Mrs. Cora B. Guyton, New Windsor; one granddaughter, Mrs. Barbara Bowlus Hoecker, wife of the Rev. David C. Hoecker, pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Herndon, Va. and two great-grandsons, Erick Rowland Hoecker and J. Edward Hoecker. Services were held at the Pleasant View Church of the Brethren near Burkittsville; burial will be in the cemetery adjoining the church; arrangements were by the Etchison Funeral Home.
