| Description | : | He was the son of Eliab and Theodosia Bidwell Brewer. He graduated from Yale University as the valedictorian in 1821. By 1827, he had authored the book, "Residence in Constantinople." He married Emilia Ann Field on 1 December 1829 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Shortly thereafter he took her to Smyrna (now Izmir), Turkey, where they were some of the first missionaries in the area. They established the first girls' school there.
